Safi Kaskas rendition of Surah The Wind-curved Sandhills, The Dunes, The Sandhills(al-Ahqaf)
---
46:1 Ha Meem,
46:2 the gradual revelations of the Book are from God, the Almighty, the Wise.
46:3 We did not create the heavens and earth and everything in between them except in Truth and for a specified term. Yet the unbelievers continue to ignore what they have been warned about.
46:4 Say, "Do you see those you pray to other than God? Show me what part of earth they have; or do they own a share in the heavens? Bring me a Book preceding this one, or a shred of knowledge, if you are truthful."
46:5 Who can be more misguided than he who calls on others beside God that do not respond to him even till the Day of Resurrection? and are not even aware that callers are calling on them.
46:6 And when people are gathered [that Day], they will be enemies to those who worshiped them, and they will renounce their worship.
46:7 But when our clear verses are recited to them, the unbelievers say to the Truth when it comes to them: "This is obvious magic."
46:8 Or do they say, "He has invented it?" Say, "If I have invented it, there is nothing at all you can do to protect me from God. He knows well what you are engaged in. He is sufficient Witness between me and you. He is the Most-Forgiving the Merciful-to-all."
46:9 Say, "I am not different from the other messengers, and I do not know what will be done with me, or with you. I only follow what has been revealed to me. I only warn plainly."
46:10 Say, "Have you considered: what if the Qur'an is really from God, and you are rejecting it? When a witness from the Children of Israel has already testified to its similarity [to earlier scripture] and believed in it, and yet you are too proud to do the same? God does not guide the unjust people."
46:11 The unbelievers say about the believers, "If it were anything good, they would not have preceded us to it." And since they were not guided by it, they will say, "This is an ancient lie."
46:12 Yet before it, was the Book revealed to Moses, a guide and as a mercy. And this a Book confirming it in Arabic tongue to warn those who are unjust and to bring good news to those who do good.
46:13 Those who say, "Our Lord is God," and then remained on a straight path, they will have nothing to fear, nor shall they grieve.
46:14 Those are destined for Paradise, where they will dwell forever, a reward for what they used to do.
46:15 We have instructed man to be kind to his parents. His mother carried him with difficulty and gave birth to him with difficulty. His bearing and weaning period is thirty months. Until, when he reaches his full strength, and is forty years of age, he says, "My Lord, help me to be grateful for the blessings You have bestowed on me and on my parents; help me to do the right deeds that are pleasing to you. Make my children good. I have sincerely repented, and I am of those who submit to You."
46:16 Those are the ones whose best deeds will be accepted and whose bad deeds will be overlooked. They will be among the dwellers of Paradise. This is the promise of truth which they had been promised.
46:17 As for him who says to his parents, "Enough of you; Are you warning me that I will be resurrected when generations have passed and gone before me?" While they both cry for God's help, "Please believe! The promise of God is true." But he says, "These are only ancient tales"
46:18 Those are the ones upon whom the verdict is justified, among nations that went before them of jinn and humans. They are truly doomed.
46:19 Everyone will be ranked according to what they have done. He will pay them in full for their deeds, and they will not be wronged.
46:20 On the Day when the unbelievers are exposed to the Fire: "You have squandered the good things you had in your worldly life, and you took your portion of pleasure there. So today you are being repaid with a punishment of humiliation, because of your unjustifiable arrogance on earth, and for transgressing all bounds."
46:21 And mention, the brother of Aad, as he warned his people at the sand dunes. Others, delivering warnings, have come and gone before him and after him: "Worship only God, they said. I fear for you the punishment of a terrible Day."
46:22 They replied, "Did you come to turn us away from our gods? Then bring us the punishment you promise us, if you are telling the truth."
46:23 He said, "Its knowledge is only with God, I only convey to you the message that I was sent with. But I see you are insolent people."
46:24 When they saw a cloud approaching their valleys they said, "This is a cloud that will bring us rain." No, it is rather what you wanted to speed up : a wind, in which there is a painful punishment,
46:25 it will destroy everything by the command of its Lord. That morning, there was nothing to be seen except their ruined dwellings. This is how We repay those who force others to reject Our messages.
46:26 We had empowered them far better than We empowered you, and We gave them hearing, vision and hearts. But their hearing, vision and hearts were of no use to them as they were rejecting the signs of God; and so they became surrounded by the very punishment they used to ridicule.
46:27 We have destroyed other towns around you, after We have diversified Our signs to them that perhaps they will return to the right path.
46:28 Why then did those idols, whom they worshiped to bring them nearer to God, not help them? In fact, they abandoned them. It was all falsehood of their own making.
46:29 We sent a group of jinn to you [Prophet) to listen to the Qur'an. When they heard it, they said "Listen quietly." Then when it was concluded, they went back to their people to warn them.
46:30 They said, "Our people, We have heard a Book revealed after Moses confirming what is available of it, guiding to the Truth and to a straight path.
46:31 Our people, respond to the Caller to God. Believe in Him; He will forgive you your sins and will protect you from a painful punishment.
46:32 But he who does not respond to God's call can never escape God's reach on earth, and have no protectors besides Him. Those are clearly misguided."
46:33 Do they not see that God, who created the heavens and earth and was never tired in doing so. Is He Able to bring the dead back to life? Yes indeed. He is Able to do all things.
46:34 On the Day when the unbelievers are exposed to the Fire "Is this not the truth?" They will say, "Yes, by our Lord." He will say, "Then taste the punishment for having rejected the Truth."
46:35 Be patient, as were those messengers of firm resolve. And do not seek to hasten punishment for them. On the Day when they see what they are promised, it will seem as they had only stayed for an hour of a single day [on earth]. An announcement: will any be destroyed except the defiantly rebellious people?
