Arabic وَلَوْ أَرَادُوا الْخُرُوجَ لَأَعَدُّوا لَهُ عُدَّةً وَلَٰكِن كَرِهَ اللَّهُ انبِعَاثَهُمْ فَثَبَّطَهُمْ وَقِيلَ اقْعُدُوا مَعَ الْقَاعِدِينَ zoom
Transliteration Walaw aradoo alkhurooja laaAAaddoo lahu AAuddatan walakin kariha Allahu inbiAAathahum fathabbatahum waqeela oqAAudoo maAAa alqaAAideena zoom
Transliteration-2 walaw arādū l-khurūja la-aʿaddū lahu ʿuddatan walākin kariha l-lahu inbiʿāthahum fathabbaṭahum waqīla uq'ʿudū maʿa l-qāʿidīna zoom

 And if they had wished (to) go forth, surely they (would) have prepa for it (some) preparation. But Allah disliked their being sent, so He made them lag behind and it was said, "Sit with those who sit." zoom


Generally Accepted Translations of the Meaning
Muhammad Asad For, had they been [truly] desirous of setting out [with thee], they would surely have made some preparation therefor: but God was averse to their taking the field, and so He caused them to hold back when it was said, "[You may] stay at home with all [the others] who stay at home." zoom
M. M. Pickthall And if they had wished to go forth they would assuredly have made ready some equipment, but Allah was averse to their being sent forth and held them back and it was said (unto them): Sit ye with the sedentary! zoom
