General Root Meaning
to give shoes to anyone, covering underneath foot preventing contact with the ground, sole, sandal. The command in the verse 20:12 to take off your shoes can be taken as a metaphorical expression for making the heart vacant from worldly relations.

And became certain Dawood that We (had) tried him, and he asked forgiveness (of) his Lord and fell down bowing and turned in repentance.
