To cut a thing or cut it off, stop, deprive, to cause to pass away, come to an end, cease/perish/come to nought, to strive/labour/toil/exert oneself, weary oneself in work, to be cut off.

سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَيَال ٍ وَثَمَانِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُوما ً فَتَرَى الْقَوْمَ فِيهَا صَرْعَى كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ خَاوِيَة ٍ
Sakhkharahā `Alayhim Sab`a Layālin Wa Thamāniyata 'Ayyāmin Ĥusūmāan Fatará Al-Qawma Fīhā Şar`á Ka'annahum 'A`jāzu Nakhlin Khāwiyahin
He unleashed it upon them for seven nights and eight days, in succession. You could see the people destroyed in it, as if they are decayed palm trunks.
