66:1  O Prophet, why in the pursuit of your wives’ approval, do you prohibit [yourself] that which Allah has made lawful to you? Allah is forgiving, ever merciful.
66:2  Allah has made incumbent upon you the legitimacy of your oaths. Allah is your Patron, and HE is the ever knowing, the all-wise.
66:3  And [remember] when the Prophet confided an observation, to one of his wives— then when she made it known, and Allah made that evident upon him, he alluded to part of it, and part of it, he did not mention. So, when he confronted her with it, she asked, “Who informed this to you?” He said, “The ever knowing, the all-aware informed me.”
66:4  If you two turn in repentance toward Allah— [so it should be], for your hearts did veer. And if you make common cause against him [i.e., the Prophet], Allah is his Patron. And pursuant to that, Gabriel, and the righteous of believers, and the angels are backers.
66:5  It may well be, if he divorces you, that his Rabb gives him in exchange better wives than you— women who have surrendered [to God], believers, obedient, repentant, devoted, questors [of God’s assent]— previously married and virgins.
66:6  O you who have embraced Faith, spare yourselves and your families a fire, the fuel of which is humans and stones. Over it are angels, firmly stern, who do not disobey Allah in whatever HE commands them, and they do whatever they are commanded.
66:7  [It will be said], “O you who have disbelieved, make no excuses today. You are being paid back only for what you were doing.”
66:8  O you who have embraced Faith, turn to Allah in repentance with sincere repentance. Your Rabb offers hope that HE will efface your misdeeds from you and admit you to gardens, subservient to which rivers flow, on a day when Allah will not shame the Prophet and those who believed along with him. Their light darting forth before them and by their right, saying, “Our Rabb, complete our light for us, and forgive us our sins. YOU almightily control all things and their measure.”
66:9  O Prophet, strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be stern with them. Their shelter is Jahannam and wretched is the journey’s end.
66:10  Allah has offered an example for the ones who have disbelieved: The wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were under two of OUR righteous devotees and they betrayed them both. So, the two [respective husbands] did not avail them any against [the judgment of] Allah, and it was said, “Enter the fire with all the entrants.”
66:11  And Allah has offered an example for the ones who have believed: The wife of Pharaoh when she said, “O my Rabb, build for me a house with YOU in Paradise and deliver me from Pharaoh and his conduct, and deliver me from the wrongdoing people.
66:12  And Mary, daughter of Imran, who guarded her chastity. So, WE breathed thereunto of OUR spirit. And she lived in full alignment with the words of HER Rabb and HIS books, and she was of the devoutly obedient.
