49:1
O you who have embraced Faith, do not precede Allah and
HIS Messenger and stay conscious of Allah. Verily, Allah is all-hearing, ever knowing.
49:2
O you who have embraced Faith, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet and do not be loud to him in speech, like the loudness of some of you with others, lest your deeds amount to naught, even as you do not realize.
49:3
Surely, the ones who lower their voices while they are with the messenger of Allah— those are the ones whose hearts Allah has primed for God-consciousness. For them is forgiveness and a transcendent reward.
49:4
Surely, the ones who shout to
you from behind the private chambers, most of them lack understanding.
49:5
If they had been patient until
you had come out to them— that would certainly have been better for them. Allah is forgiving, ever merciful.
49:6
O you who have embraced Faith, if an impious person comes to you with any news— ascertain the facts lest you cause harm to a people through ignorance and then become regretful for what you have done.
49:7
And realize that amongst you is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would surely come to grief, whereas Allah has endeared the Faith to you and beautified it in your hearts, and has made all disbelief, and all iniquity, and all disobedience [to God and HIS Messenger] unnatural to you. Those are the ones with sound judgment—
49:8
A grace and blessing from Allah. And Allah is ever knowing, all-wise.
49:9
And if two parties from among the believers engage in fighting— make peace between them. But if one of them commits an outrage against the other, then fight the one which is committing the outrage, until [that party] reverses back to the command of Allah. Then if it has reversed itself, make peace between them with justice and be fair. Know that Allah loves those who are just and fair.
49:10
The true believers are no other than a brotherhood. So, make peace between your brothers and stay conscious of Allah to enable you to receive mercy.
49:11
O you who have embraced Faith, one subset of people must not ridicule another. It may well be that the latter are better than them. Nor a subset of women [should ridicule another]. It may be that [those women whom they ridicule] are better than them. Do not malign yourselves and do not be derisive with nicknames. ‘
Al- fusūq,’ [the calling one another by names of reproach], how reprehensible is the very term after the embrace of Faith. And whoever does not repent— those ones are doing wrong.
49:12
O you who have embraced Faith, set yourselves apart from most of the generalizations
[in your midst]. Verily, some generalizations are sin. Do not engage in spying and do not, some of you, backbite others. Would any one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? For [innately], you have despised that. Be conscious of Allah. Know that Allah is a ready acceptor of repentance, ever merciful.
49:13
O humanity,
WE have created you of a male and a female and placed you in races and tribes, so you may get to know one another. Of certain, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most God-conscious of you. Surely, Allah is ever knowing, all-aware.
49:14
The desert Arabs have said, “We have embraced Faith.” Say, “You have not yet embraced Faith, so say instead, ‘We have acquiesced,’ for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allah and
HIS messenger,
HE will not take away anything from your deeds. Of certain, Allah is truly forgiving, ever merciful.”
49:15
The only true believers are those who believe in Allah and
HIS messenger, thereafter they do not waver and strive with their wealth and their lives in the Way of Allah. Those very ones are the truthful.
49:16
Say, “Do you apprise Allah about your faith, while Allah is knowing of whatsoever is in the heavens and on the earth? Allah is ever knowing of all things.”
49:17
[Do] they confer a favor upon
you that they have professed Islam. Say, “Do not confer favor upon me by your Islam. Nay! Allah has conferred favor upon you, that
HE has steered you to the true Faith— if you are truthful.”
49:18
Of certain, Allah knows the unseeable of the heavens and the earth and Allah is all-seeing of all that you do.
