47:1
The ones who have disbelieved and barred [others] from the path of Allah— HE has caused their doings to be lost.
47:2
Whereas the ones who have embraced Faith, and have done the right deeds, and believed in what has been revealed upon Muhammad— and it is the Truth from their
Rabb—
HE has effaced their misdeeds, and
HE has mended their condition.
47:3
That is because the ones who have disbelieved pursued falsehood and because those who have embraced Faith pursued the Truth from their
Rabb. In such ways Allah illustrates for humankind their [comparative] models.
47:4
So, when you come to face the ones who have disbelieved, then a smiting of the necks, until you have worn them out— [only] then tie up the bond [of captivity]. Thereupon, either a favor, or a ransom until the battle has shed its burden. Thus [are you to act]. If Allah had willed,
HE could have surely exacted retribution from them but [it is thus] so
HE may test some of you through others. And those who are killed in the path of Allah—
HE never lets their deeds be lost.
47:5
HE will show them the way and mend whole their state
47:6
And admit them to the Garden which
HE has made familiar to them.
47:7
O you who have embraced Faith, if you support Allah,
HE will help you and steady your steps.
47:8
While the ones who have disbelieved— for them is misery, and
HE has caused their doings to be lost.
47:9
That is because they loathed what Allah had revealed. So,
HE rendered their doings to naught.
47:10
Do they not travel the earth, to see how the end-fate of the ones before them was? Allah brought utter destruction upon them, and for the disbelievers are the likes of it.
47:11
That because Allah is the Patron of the believers, and because there is no patron for the disbelievers.
47:12
Of certain, Allah will admit those who had believed and did the right deeds into gardens with rivers flowing subservient to them. While those who have disbelieved, indulging and devouring like the cattle devour, the fire is the dwelling for them.
47:13
And how many a town have
WE destroyed which was more intense in power than the town of
yours which drove
you out? Thereupon there was no helper for them.
47:14
Is one who stands on telling evidence from his
Rabb like one to whom is made fair seeming the foulness of his deeds and they pursue their own whims?
47:15
The parable of the Garden which is promised to the God-conscious: In it are rivers of water, pollution free; and rivers of milk, flavor of it not subject to change; and rivers of wine, delicious for the drinkers; and rivers of filtered honey. And for them therein are from all the fruits, and forgiveness from their
Rabb. [Are the God-conscious anywise] the like of one abiding in the fire, slaked by water, bereft of mercy [
ḥamīm]— torn by it are their insides?
47:16
And among them are such who listen to
you, but when they leave
your presence, they say to the ones who were given the knowledge, “What is it that he had just said?” Those are the ones upon whose hearts Allah has set a seal and they pursue their own whims.
47:17
And the ones who acquired guidance—
HE amplifies their guidance and grants them their conscientiousness.
47:18
So then, are they expecting aught except the Hour’s sudden coming upon them? For its necessary conditions have already come. So then, how and where will they have their reminder when [the Hour] is upon them?
47:19
So, know that there is no god except Allah and seek forgiveness for
your imperfection, and as well for the believing men and the believing women. Allah knows the comings and goings of you all, and your dwellings.
47:20
And the ones who have believed, say, “Why has a
surah not been revealed, but then when an actionable
surah is revealed and fighting is mentioned therein,
you have seen the ones in whose hearts is a disease, looking at
you— with the look of the one upon whom is the swoon of death. So now [with revelation on hand] a higher course for them.
47:21
Obedience and a most appropriate speech. For when the matter [of fighting] was resolved—if they had been true to Allah, better for sure that would have been for them.
47:22
So now, is it possible for you, if you assume the trust, that you sow discord in the land and sever your ties of kinship?
47:23
Those very ones Allah has rejected and denounced—
HE has shut their ears and blinded their sight.
47:24
Do they then not ponder the Quran? Or are there locks upon their hearts?
47:25
Verily, those who turned tail and renounced after what the guidance had clarified for them— Satan has seduced them, and he has dictated to them.
47:26
That is because they have said to the ones who have loathed what Allah has revealed, “We will obey you in some part of the undertaking [of yours].” Allah knows their secrets.
47:27
So how will it be when the angels collect them, exposing their faces and their backs.
47:28
That because they pursued what Allah has disapproved of, and they loathed pursuing Allah’s assent. So,
HE rendered their deeds to naught.
47:29
Or do the ones in whose hearts is a disease surmise that Allah will never let out their grudges?
47:30
If
WE had willed,
WE would have explicitly shown them to
you, so
you could identify them with their marks, whereas
you will surely recognize them through the vagueness of their speech. And Allah knows your deeds.
47:31
And
WE will surely test you until
WE have proven out the strivers and the persevering among you. And
WE will test you [for the sincerity] of your stated stances.
47:32
Those who have disbelieved and prevent others from the cause of Allah and break from the messenger after what the Guidance has clarified for them— they can never in any way harm Allah. And
HE is to render their deeds to naught.
47:33
O those of you who have embraced Faith, do obey Allah, and obey the Messenger and do not render your works false.
47:34
Verily, the ones who had disbelieved and had hindered others from the path of Allah and then died while they were disbelievers— Allah will not forgive them.
47:35
So then, do not give up and [do not] plead for the truce [resulting from that], while you are the ones on the higher moral grounds. Allah is with you, and
HE will not part your deeds from you.
47:36
The earthly life is only a contest and a passing interlude and if you believe and are conscious of God,
HE will give you your deserved dues and not ask you for your wealth [except for your own good].
47:37
If
HE were to ask you for it, then press you inconsiderately, you would withhold, and
HE would let out your grudges.
47:38
O you here, you are invited to spend in the path of Allah— though among you are such who are stingy and whoever is stingy— he is stingy against his own soul. Allah is the Self-Sufficient ONE and you are the needy. And if you all turn away,
HE will bring in replacement a people, other than you. Furthermore, they will not be the likes of you.
