44:1  Ha. Meem.
44:2  By the clear and open timeless Book
44:3  It is WE Who revealed it on a blessed night. Surely, WE are ever warning.
44:4  Within [the blessed night] every command, ever wise, is distinctly defined—
44:5  A command directly from US. Surely, WE are ever sending
44:6  mercy from your Rabb. Indeed, HE is the all-hearing, the ever knowing
44:7  Rabb of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them— if you were to be truly certain.
44:8  There is no god but HE. HE gives life and HE gives death. Your Rabb and the Rabb of your foremost forefathers.
44:9  But nay, they dabble in uncertainty.
44:10  So then set your sight upon a day the sky bears visible smoke,
44:11  engulfing the people. [They will say], “This is an agonizing punishment.
44:12  O Our Lord do relieve us of this punishment. Surely, we are believers.”
44:13  Why and where is the remembrance from them? A clear and expressive messenger did come to them.
44:14  They had turned away from him then, and had said, “A coached man, possessed is he.”
44:15  Verily, WE are the remover of the punishment, a little. Verily, you are ones reverting.
44:16  On a day WE are to seize them with the transcendent seizing. Of certain WE are the One to exact retribution.
44:17  WE indeed had already tried the people of Pharaoh before them, and a noble messenger had come to them:
44:18  “Deliver the devotees of Allah to me. Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger unto you
44:19  And do not exalt yourselves above Allah. For certain, I come to you with evident authority.
44:20  I have taken refuge with my Rabb and the Rabb of you all; in case you pelt me with stones.
44:21  And if you believe me not, then keep away from me.”
44:22  So [with the message rejected and the warnings unheeded] he called out unto his Rabb: “Surely, these are a people, flouting divine guidance.
44:23  [It was said to him], “Then set out at night with MY devotees. For certain, you will be pursued.
44:24  And leave behind you the sea still [and parted]. For certain, they are an army set to drown.”
44:25  How many of gardens and springs did they leave behind,
44:26  and how many of tilled fertile fields, and noble standings,
44:27  and how much of a blessing they were taking delight in.
44:28  Thus, it was. And WE bequeathed them to another people.
44:29  Whereupon the sky wept not over them, nor the earth and they were given no respite.
44:30  And WE did indeed deliver the children of Israel from the humiliating torment,
44:31  from Pharaoh. Surely, he was haughty, of the prodigals.
44:32  WE did select them [i.e., the children of Israel] over the realms, for the knowledge [imparted to them].
44:33  And WE did give them from the signs, in that was a clear test.
44:34  Verily, these people here, they do so brazenly say,
44:35  “There is naught, but our first death and we are not to be raised again
44:36  Or then, bring back our forefathers, if you are truthful.”
44:37  Are they better off or the people of Tubba, or those before them? WE destroyed them. Indeed, they were flouters of divine guidance.
44:38  WE did not create the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them in mere play.
44:39  WE did not create them except in [expression of] the Truth, but most of them do not realize.
44:40  Surely, on a Day of Sorting is their tryst, all together.
44:41  A day, no relative shall avail a relative in anything, nor will they be helped—
44:42  Except one whom Allah had shown mercy. Indeed, HE is the Almighty, the ever Merciful.
44:43  Surely, the tree of Zaqqum
44:44  is the food of the unrelenting sinner
44:45  Like murky oil, bubbling in the bellies
44:46  Like the [murky] bubbling of the fluid bereft of mercy [amīm].
44:47  “Seize him, then drag him in the confines of Jaīm.
44:48  Then pour above his head the punishment of the fluid bereft of mercy [amīm].
44:49  Partake! You were the mighty, the noble!
44:50  This here is what you were in doubt about.
44:51  Surely, the God-conscious are in secure standing—
44:52  Amidst gardens and springs.
44:53  Donning clothes of silk and brocade, engaged face to face.
44:54  Thus, it is, and WE paired them with earnest-eyed heavenly companions.
44:55  They ask [at will] therein, for every kind of delicious fruit, secure [against denial].
44:56  They will taste not death therein, save the first death. And HE did spare them the punishment of Jaīm.
44:57  A grace from your Rabb. That is the transcendent success.
44:58  So [to that end], WE have only made it easy in your language—to enable them to mindfully reflect.
44:59  So set your sight. They surely have their sights set.
