36:1  YA. SEEN.

36:2  By the wise Quran

36:3  Indeed, you certainly are of the Messengers

36:4  on a timelessly straight path.

36:5  A sending down of a revelation of the Almighty, the Ever Merciful

36:6  that you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, and so they are heedless [of the Truth].

36:7  The Word did become due upon most of them, for they do not believe.

36:8  Surely, WE have engendered shackles in their necks— up to their chins, their heads locked in a snobbish stance [missing the Truth].

36:9  And WE have set a barrier in front of them and a barrier behind them, then WE have covered them, so they do not see.

36:10  And it is the same to them whether you have warned them or not warned them. They are not to believe.

36:11  You can only warn one who follows the Reminder and who is in reverence of Al Raḥmān, in all that is hidden from him yet fully manifest to HIM. So, convey to such the divine tidings of forgiveness and of a generous reward.

36:12  Surely, WE give life to the dead and record what they send ahead, and their legacies. And WE have accounted for each thing in a clear ledger.

36:13  And set forth for them an example of the inhabitants of this one settlement, when the messengers came to it:

36:14  When WE sent two unto them, they denied both. Then WE reinforced with a third—so [now all three] said, “Behold, we are messengers sent unto you.”

36:15  They said, “You are not but mere mortals like us and not has Al Raḥmān sent down anything. You are merely lying.

36:16  [The messengers] said, “Our Rabb knows that we are messengers unto you.

36:17  And nothing else is incumbent upon us except the express conveyance.”

36:18  The [inhabitants] said, “Truly, we augur misfortune associated with you. If you do not desist, we will most certainly pelt you with stones, and a painful punishment from us is bound to graze you.”

36:19  [The messengers] said, “Your ill-auguring belongs with you. Do [you augur ill] if you are reminded? For a fact, you are a prodigal people”

36:20  And came a man running with purpose, from the far end of the city. He pleaded, “O my people follow the messengers.

36:21  Follow those who ask for no wage of you and are rightly guided.

36:22  And what cause do I have not to worship the One WHO brought me into being. And unto HIM you are being returned.

36:23  Am I to take gods besides HIM! If Al Raḥmān wants me to be in hardship, their intercession will avail me nothing, nor could they rescue me.

36:24  Surely, I would then indeed be in a categorical error.

36:25  Verily, I have believed in your Rabb, so do listen to me.”

36:26  It was said unto him, “Enter the Garden.” He said, “Ah! I wish that my people would know

36:27  with what [grace] my Rabb has forgiven me and placed me amongst the honored ones.”

36:28  And WE did not send down on his people any forces from Heaven [to force them to believe] after him, and not ever WE send down [such forces].

36:29  It was not except a single blast, following which they were still-silent.

36:30  What regret the [false] worshippers bear! Not a messenger came to them, except they belittled him.

36:31  Have they not seen how many generations before them WE have destroyed and [have they not seen] that they [who have perished] are not returning to them?

36:32  And without exception for any, all are one gathering presented before US.

36:33  And the dead land is a sign for them. WE gave it life and WE brought forth grain from it— from it they eat.

36:34  And in it WE have placed gardens of date palms and grapevines, and WE have caused flows from the springs,

36:35  that they may eat of HIS fruits. And not have their hands accomplished it! Will they then not be grateful?

36:36  Limitless in HIS dominion and glory is HE Who created all the pairs of what the earth proliferates, and of their own selves, and of that which they do not know.”

36:37  And the night is a sign for them. WE strip away the light of day from it— and then they are the ones in darkness.

36:38  While the sun flows smoothly to every locale assigned to it. That is the measuring-out of the Almighty, the All-knowing.

36:39  And WE have measured out phases for the moon, until it returns like a dried-old palm sliver.

36:40  The sun—not is it fitting for it that it usurps the moon, and the night is not a preemptor of the light of day. Each floating in its heavenly vault.

36:41  And a sign for them [which they see] is that WE bore their offspring in the filled vessel [of the womb]

36:42  And WE created for them from its like [i.e., the filled womb] that upon which they ride.

36:43  And if WE were to will, WE could drown them— not a scream for them to have, and not would they be rescued

36:44  except by a mercy from US and a provision through to a time.

36:45  And [it is also a sign of the mercy of God] when it is said to them, “Be conscious of what is before you [and in your knowledge] and what is beyond you [and your knowledge], to enable you to be graced with mercy.”

36:46  Whereas not a sign from the many signs of their Rabb comes to them except they turn away from it dismissively.

36:47  And when it said to them, “Spend from what Allah has provided for you,” the ones who have disbelieved say to the believers, “Are we to feed one who Allah would have fed, had HE so willed? You are caught in nothing except a categorical error.”

36:48  And they ask, “When is this promise [to come true], if you espouse the truth?”

36:49  They will consider nothing, except a single blast seizing them while they go on disputing.

36:50  Then they will not be able to bequeath anything, nor will they return to their households:

36:51  And [the souls] were blown into the forms— and promptly from their repositories unto their Rabb, they ravel out.

36:52  They said, “O woe unto us. Who raised us from our sleeping sites? This is what Al Raḥmān had promised, and the Messengers had foretold the truth!”

36:53  It was nothing but a single blast— right away they were an assembly presented before US.

36:54  “So, this day no soul is wronged in any way, and you are not being requited except [by the measure] of what you were doing.

36:55  Indeed! This day, the beneficiaries of the Garden are in a joyous preoccupation— enjoying the fruits [of their deeds]

36:56  they and their mates, under shades, on couches, reclining in cushioned comfort

36:57  For them in it are joyous fruits, and for them is whatever they call for.

36:58  ‘Peace [Salaam]!’ A pronouncement from an ever-merciful Rabb.

36:59  And [another pronouncement], “Be marked apart today, O you, the flouters of divine guidance.

36:60  Did I not bind to you to a covenant, O children of Adam: Do not serve Satan. Verily, he is a blatant foe to you

36:61  And: Serve ME. This is a straight path.

36:62  And [Satan] had already misled into error many multitudes of you. So then did you not realize?

36:63  This is Jahannam of which you were forewarned.

36:64  Fuel it today because you were being ungrateful.”

36:65  This day WE have placed a seal on their mouths, while their hands speak with US, and their feet testify as to what they were earning.

36:66  If WE had willed, WE could have outright blotted out their eyes— then they would have raced the Path. So then [with their sights] how and where are they looking?

36:67  And if WE had willed, WE could have surely caused them to regress in their places, so they would not be able to move forward, nor return.

36:68  To whomever WE grant a long life, WE reverse him through the [states of] creation— Do they not reason?

36:69  WE have not taught him [i.e., the Prophet] poetry, and neither would that be befitting for him. It is not but a reminder and a telling recital [Quran]

36:70  That he may warn whoever is alive and to justify the Word [of God’s final judgement] upon the disbelievers.

36:71  Do they not see that WE created livestock for them, from what OUR hands have rendered? So then, do they have [the real] ownership to them?

36:72  And [do they not see that] WE have made them tame for them— some of them are their mounts, and some they consume?

36:73  And for them in [their livestock] are [many] benefits and [living] sources of drink. Are they then not grateful?

36:74  And they have adopted gods besides Allah, fancying being helped!

36:75  They have no ability to come to their aid. They are a mustered army for them.

36:76  So, let not their words grieve you. WE do know what they hide and what they declare.

36:77  Does man not see that WE created him from a drop, then in sudden change he is a blatant disputant.

36:78  And he poses a scenario for US, while forgetting his own creation: He has said, “Who will give life to the bones which are a decaying rot?”

36:79  Say, “HE will give them life WHO brought them into being in the first instance. HE is ever knowing about every created being.

36:80  HE WHO rendered fire for you from the green tree—thence at will, do you kindle thereof.

36:81  Is not HE WHO created the heavens and the earth, one with almighty say and ability over HIS creating the like of them? Nay! HE is the Supreme Creator, the ever knowing.

36:82  HIS command when HE wills a thing is that HE only says unto it, “Be.” — and so it comes to be.

36:83  Thus, is HE— limitless in HIS dominion and glory— HE in whose HAND is the dominion of all things and unto HIM you are being returned.
