29:1  Alif. Lãm. Mĩm.

29:2  Do men construe that they will be left to be, by [merely] saying, “We believe,” and they will not be made to face tests?

29:3  WE did indeed put to test the ones before them. Whereas Allah absolutely knows the ones who were true, and HE absolutely knows the liars.

29:4  Do the ones who engage in dark deeds construe that they can outpace US? How badly they judge!

29:5  Whoever expects the meeting of Allah— of certain, the appointed time of Allah is ever approaching. HE is the all-hearing, ever knowing.

29:6  And whoever strives, he then strives only for his own soul. Surely, Allah is self-sufficient and independent of all realms.

29:7  Those who have embraced Faith and have done the right deeds, WE shall certainly efface their misdeeds from them, and WE shall certainly reward them by the best of what they were doing.

29:8  WE have enjoined upon man goodness towards his parents, but if the two belabor you to make you associate with ME that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not. Unto ME is your defined return. Thereupon I will tell you about what you were doing.

29:9  Those who have embraced Faith and have done the right deeds, WE most certainly shall admit them in [the company of] the righteous.

29:10  Among men is he who says, “I have believed in Allah,” but when he is injured in [the cause of] Allah, he treats the persecution of men as if it were the punishment of Allah. But if victory comes from your Rabb, they will most certainly say: “Surely, we were with you.” Does Allah not know best about what is held in the core of all the beings?

29:11  Allah absolutely knows the ones who have believed, and HE absolutely knows the hypocrites.

29:12  The ones who have disbelieved have said to the ones who have believed, “Follow our way and we shall bear your mistakes.” They are not anywise bearers of any bit of their mistakes. They are certain liars.

29:13  And they will surely be bearing their loads. And loads along with their own loads, and they shall most certainly be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about that which they were fabricating.

29:14  WE did send Noah to his people. So, he spent a thousand periods among them, save fifty years. Then the Storm seized them, while they [remained unrepentant] wrongdoers.

29:15  So, WE delivered him, and the boarders of the ship and WE made it all a sign for all realms.

29:16  And [remember] Abraham, when he said to his people, “Worship Allah and be conscious of HIM. That is a real blessing for you, if you were to know.

29:17  You serve idols instead of Allah, and you only give form to falsehood. Those you worship instead of Allah have no dominion over your sustenance. So, seek that real sustenance with Allah, and serve HIM and be grateful unto HIM. Unto HIM you are being returned.”

29:18  And if you give the lie [to the truth], so did give the lie communities before you. Upon the Messenger is nothing but the clear and open conveyance.

29:19  Do they not see how Allah originates all creation and then repeats it? Surely, that is easy for Allah.

29:20  Say, “Travel the earth and observe how HE has originated the creation out of nothing. Furthermore, Allah will bring into existence the final existence. Surely, Allah is in full control over all things and their measure.

29:21  HE punishes whom HE wills, and HE dispenses mercy to whom HE wills, and unto HIM are you being turned back.

29:22  You cannot be thwarters [of God’s will] on earth, or in the Heavens. Other than Allah, you have neither a protector nor a helper.”

29:23  The ones who have disbelieved in the signs of Allah and HIS meeting, those will despair of MY mercy. And those will have an agonizing punishment.

29:24  Yet, the reply of [Abraham’s] people was none except that they said, “Kill him or burn him.” Thereupon Allah delivered him from the fire. Behold, in that are definite signs for a people who believe.

29:25  He said, “You have taken to idols instead of Allah only for the bonds of love between yourselves in this earthly life. Then on the day of Resurrection some of you will disown others and some of you will denounce others. Your shelter will be the fire, and you will not have anyone coming to your aid.”

29:26  Thereupon, Lot believed him, and he said, “I am a fleer unto my Rabb. Verily, HE is the Almighty, all-wise.”

29:27  And WE gifted him with Isaac and Jacob and placed prophethood and the timeless Book [of Scripture] amongst his offspring and gave him his reward in the world. And certainly, in the Hereafter, he is assuredly of the righteous.

29:28  And [remember] Lot when he said to his people, “You are bent on committing the indecency, which none had preceded you with in all the realms.

29:29  Do you sexually couple with men, while severing the way [of nature and life] and committing the immoral [practice] in your social meets!” To that, the response of his people was nothing except that they said, “Bring on the punishment of Allah upon us if you are of the truthful.”

29:30  He said, “My Rabb, help me against the degenerate people.”

29:31  And when in time OUR messengers came to Abraham with the divine tiding they said, “We are the destroyers of the inhabitants of this town. Verily, its inhabitants have been wrongdoers.”

29:32  He said, “Lot is in it.” They said, “We know better as to who is in it. We will most certainly deliver him and his family, except his wife. She was ever of the laggards.”

29:33  And when it was that OUR messengers came to Lot, he was in anguish about them and had no capacity to ably facilitate them. Whereas they said, “Do not fear and do not grieve. Surely, we are the deliverers of you and your family, except your wife. She was ever of the laggards.

29:34  Surely, we are to bring down upon the inhabitants of this town, a pestilence from the sky because they were iniquitous.”

29:35  And WE did indeed leave a telling sign of it for a people who use their reason.

29:36  And [God sent] to Madyan, their brother Shuaib. Accordingly, he said, “O my people serve Allah and do count on the Last Day, and do not act wickedly in the land, as spreaders of rot.”

29:37  [Even so], they denied him. So, the quake seized them and then come morning they lay face down in their homes.

29:38  And [God seized] Aad and Thamūd, already obvious to you from their dwelling places. Satan had made their actions fair seeming to them, and thus had dissuaded them from the Way, though they were ably insightful.

29:39  And [God seized] Qārūn and Pharaoh and Hāmān. Moses indeed had come to them with telling proofs, but they waxed arrogant in the land, and they were not to outpace [God].

29:40  So, each WE seized by [the measure of] his trespass. For, of them is such toward whom WE sent a violent storm, and of them is such who was seized by the blast, and of them is such WE caused the earth to swallow, and of them is such who WE drowned. It was not ever for Allah to wrong them. On the contrary, they were doing wrong to themselves.

29:41  The example of those who have taken protectors other than Allah is like the example of the spider who took a home. And indeed, the frailest of homes is the home of the spider. If they were to know.

29:42  Surely, Allah knows what they invoke other than HIM— of any sort. HE is the almighty, the all-wise.

29:43  Those are the examples, WE lay forth for humankind, though none grasp them except the ones with knowing.

29:44  Allah has created the heavens and the earth in [expression of] the Truth. Verily, a definite sign is in that for the believers.

29:45  Recite what has been revealed to you of the timeless Book and stay anchored in Prayer. Of certain, Prayer restrains from the indecent and the immoral. And the remembrance of Allah is ever greater. Allah knows what you engage in.

29:46  Do not dispute with the people of the timeless Book except in a manner which is most beautiful—excluding those of them who are unjust—and say, “We believe in that which was sent upon us and sent upon you. And our God and your God is one and we are ever surrendered to HIM.”

29:47  And likewise, have WE sent the timeless Book to you. So those whom WE have given the timeless Book [before you] believe in it. And among these here are some who believe in it. None contends with OUR signs except the ungrateful.

29:48  And before it, you were not reciting from any book, nor do you write it with your own right hand. If that were the case, the purveyors of falsehood would have certainly bred [even more] doubt.

29:49  Rather, it is [a timeless Book of] telling verses in the bosoms of those who have been given the knowledge. None renounce OUR verses except the intellectually dishonest.

29:50  They have said, “Why are [miraculous] signs from his Rabb not sent upon him?” Say, “All the signs are only with Allah, and I am only a plain warner.”

29:51  Does it not suffice for them that WE sent down upon you the timeless Book, which is being recited unto them? Verily, in that is sure mercy and a reminder for a people who believe.

29:52  Say, “Sufficient is Allah as witness between me and you. HE knows whatever is in the heavens and the earth.” Those who have believed in falsehoods and disbelieved in Allah— those very ones who are the losers.

29:53  They dare you to hasten the punishment. If it were not for a defined term, the punishment would have surely come upon them. And it shall certainly come upon them suddenly, while they are unawares.

29:54  They dare you to hasten the punishment, while Jahannam is ever encompassing of the disbelievers.

29:55  On a day, the punishment will engulf them from on top of them and from beneath their feet. And it will say, “Partake what you were doing.”

29:56  O devotees of MINE who have believed! Behold! MY earth is vast— Only I [there is no other God]. Do then serve ME.

29:57  Every soul is a taster of death. Then to US will you be returned.

29:58  And those who have embraced Faith and have done the right deeds, WE shall surely situate them in lofty abodes of the Garden, with streams flowing in subservience to it— therein to abide. Excellent is the reward of [HIS devoted] workers—

29:59  the ones who had persevered and rely on their Rabb.

29:60  How many a free-roaming creature does not pack its own sustenance! Allah! HE provides for them and for you. HE is the all-hearing, the ever knowing.

29:61  And if you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, and put the sun and the moon into compliance, they will readily say, “Allah.” Then how and where are they hoodwinked?

29:62  Allah! He expands provision for whoever of HIS created beings HE wills, and HE measures out for him. Verily, Allah is ever knowing of all things.

29:63  And if you ask them who sends down water from the sky and thereby revives the earth after it is dead, they will readily say, “Allah.” Say, “All praise is for Allah.” However, most of them reason not.

29:64  This earthly life is nothing except a passing interlude and a contest. Surely, the home of the Hereafter— that is the Real Life, were they to know.

29:65  So [in evidence of valuing only this life]: When they board the vessel, they invoke Allah, while being sincere to HIM in their Faith. But when HE delivers them ashore, right then they attribute partners to God.

29:66  Let them be ungrateful for what WE have given them and let them indulge themselves with the temporal! For, they shall soon get to know [how ungrateful they were].

29:67  Do they not see that WE have made a secure sanctuary [for them], while men are taken away from around them? Will they then [given that land can be as unsafe as sea], continue to believe in falsehood, and continue to be ungrateful of Allah’s blessings?

29:68  And who is more wrong than one who invented a lie against Allah, or consistently lied about the Truth, when it came to him? Is not Jahannam [a just] dwelling for the [ungrateful] disbelievers?

29:69  Whereas those who have striven in OUR [ways], WE shall surely continue to guide them along OUR ways. Verily, Allah is assuredly with those who do good in selfless devotion to God.
