22:1  O humankind, be conscious of your Rabb. Surely, the jolt of the Hour is a transcendent matter.
22:2  On the day you see it, every nursing mother will neglect what she nursed, and every pregnant woman will deliver her burden. And you will see humankind inebriated, and not so with inebriants— but intense is the punishment of Allah.
22:3  And of men is one who contends about Allah other than with any knowledge and follows every obstinately defiant satanic entity.
22:4  It is ordained upon him [Satan] that whoever turns to him as an ally—he is to mislead him and steer him to the punishment of the blaze.
22:5  O humankind, if you are in doubt about the Resurrection, then surely [instructive is that] WE created you from dust, then from a drop of semen, then from a leech-like clot, then from an embryo, created and uncreated [Spirit breathed by God into man], that WE may give you a clear perspective. And WE give lodgment in the wombs, to what WE will, through a defined term. Thereafter WE bring you forth as an infant, that you may attain to your utmost. And among you is such who is collected [in death], and among you is such who is sent back to the most decrepit of the [stages of] life, purposed to his not knowing anything, post knowing. And you see the earth barren; thereafter when WE send down the water upon it— it stirs, swells, and fosters a profusion of every splendored species.
22:6  That [constant change occurs] because only Allah is the [unchanging] REALITY. HE alone gives life to the dead, and HE alone has control over all things and their measure.
22:7  And [to remind you] that the Hour is coming—no doubt [whatsoever] in that. And that Allah will resurrect those in the graves.
22:8  And among men is such who contends about Allah other than with any knowledge, without guidance, and without any enlightening book.
22:9  With a shrug of his shoulder, [he contends], to mislead [others] from the path of Allah. For him there is disgrace in this world; and on the day of Resurrection, WE will have him partake the punishment of the Burning:
22:10  “That is because of what your hands sent ahead. And because Allah is not ever in any way an oppressive sovereign to [HIS] subjects.”
22:11  Among men is such who worships Allah tentatively. So then, if good befalls him he is content with it, and if a trial befalls him, he turns about on his face. He has lost the world and the Hereafter. That is the evident, unabating loss:
22:12  He invokes other than Allah, which can neither harm nor benefit him. That is the far-gone error.
22:13  He calls unto one whose harm is more likely than his benefit. How miserable is the patron and how miserable is the companion [he takes].
22:14  Surely, Allah will admit the ones who have embraced Faith and have done the right deeds in gardens with streams flowing in subservience to them. Indeed, Allah does what HE intends.
22:15  Whosoever has made up his mind that Allah will not support him in this life and the Hereafter— let him stretch to the sky through [any] means, then sever [from earthly existence], and then see. Will any of his conniving remove whatever is causing the rage?
22:16  And thus [to reveal the unseeable], WE have sent down [revelation], in expressive verses. And of certain, Allah guides whosoever HE intends.
22:17  Surely, the ones who have embraced Faith and the ones who follow the Jewish faith, and the Sabeans, and the Christians, and the Magians, and the ones who set partners [with God]—Allah will decide between them on the day of Resurrection. Surely, Allah is a witness over all things.
22:18  Do you not see that it is Allah! To HIM prostrates whosoever is in the heavens and whosoever is on the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains, and the trees, and the free-roaming creatures, and many [through the many ages] amongst humankind. And upon many [through the many ages], the punishment is rightfully due. He whom Allah abases—there is none to dignify him. Verify Allah does what HE wills. ۩
22:19  These here are two classes of contenders in contention about their Rabb. Consequentially, the ones who disbelieve, for them are garments cut from fire, fluids bereft of mercy [amīm] pouring from over their heads,
22:20  Whereby will melt what is in their bellies, and their skins.
22:21  And for them are curbs of iron
22:22  Whenever they try to pass out of it from distress, they will be made to repeat therein: “Partake the punishment of the burning.”
22:23  Of certain, Allah will admit the ones who had attained faith and did the right deeds in gardens with streams running in subservience to them. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearls, and their clothes therein are silk.
22:24  They were guided to the most pristine of the Word and guided unto the path of the Praiseworthy.
22:25  Those who have disbelieved and hinder others from the path of Allah and the Inviolable House of Worship— which WE have appointed for humankind, equally for the domiciled therein and the Bedouins, and anyone who intends therein deviant conduct in violation [of the sanctity of the House]— WE will make such [as them] taste an agonizing punishment.
22:26  And when WE had facilitated for Abraham the site of the House [with the instruction]: Do not associate aught with ME and purify MY House for those who circle it, and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate.
22:27  Announce amongst humankind about the pilgrimage. They shall come to you on foot and every lean and fast mount, coming from every direction
22:28  in order for them to experience the benefits, and mention the name of Allah, within defined days, over what HE has provided for them of the robust of the livestock. Then eat thereof and feed the miserable, the poverty-stricken.
22:29  Thereafter let them conclude their state of self-denial and let them fulfil their vows and let them circle the long-standing House.
22:30  That, and whoever honors Allah’s sacred forbiddances— that is better for him with Allah. And made lawful for you are all cattle, except what has been conveyed to you. Steer away from the pestilence of idols and avoid speech of falsehood,
22:31  staying earnest for Allah, apart from those who associate partners with HIM. Whoever associates partners with Allah—it is as if he had fallen from the sky, and then was snatched by the birds, or swept by the wind to a desolate [wind-worn] place.
22:32  That, and whoever honors the commemorative markers of Allah, that indeed is from their hearts’ God-consciousness.
22:33  For you in them are benefits to derive through a defined term, and further to that, their place of sacrifice is to the long-standing House.
22:34  For every community WE have appointed a rite [of sacrifice], that they may mention the name of Allah over what HE has provided them of the robust of livestock. For your God is ONE God. So, surrender to HIM, and give good tidings to the ones with inner calm—
22:35  the ones whose hearts yield from fear when Allah is cited, and ones who persevere through what befalls them, and the maintainers of the Prayer, while spending [in God’s way] from what WE have provided to them.
22:36  And the sacrifice of cattle, which WE have appointed for you, is among the commemorative markers of Allah. For you therein is beneficence. So, [in remembrance of HIS beneficence] mention the name of Allah over them as they are lined up. Then when they are lifeless on their sides, then [in remembrance of HIS beneficence] consume of them and feed [both], the one content with meager, and the one who is visibly poor. [Manifestly] thus have WE made them [i.e., the cattle] subservient to you, to enable you to give thanks.
22:37  Not ever is their meat or their blood to reach Allah, but what reaches HIM is the God-consciousness emanating from you. Thus, has HE subjected them to you, that you acknowledge the transcendent greatness of Allah, for having guided you. And give good tidings to those who do good in selfless devotion to God.
22:38  It is Allah— HE defends the ones who have believed. Hearken! Allah loves not any faithless betrayer.
22:39  Permission [to fight back] is given to those who are attacked, because it is they who have been wronged. And indeed, Allah is ever in almighty control over their victory.
22:40  [Victory for] the ones who were expelled from their homes without any rightful justification, except for their saying, “Our Rabb is Allah.” If it were not for Allah’s repelling some people by others, broken down would be, sanctuaries, and churches, and formal prayers, and the places dedicated to prostration— [all places] wherein they are to remember Allah’s name abidingly. Allah will surely help whoever helps HIS cause. Surely, Allah is all-powerful, almighty.
22:41  [Helpers in Allah’s cause are those] who, if WE were to establish them on the land, stay anchored in Prayer and give Zakat, and enjoin the fair, and forbid the immoral. To Allah belongs the finality of all matters.
22:42  And if they deny you—so did those before them deny, the people of Noah, and Aad, and Thamūd.
22:43  And [so too] the people of Abraham and the people of Lot.
22:44  And the residents of Madyan. And Moses was denied. [In all these cases] I gave leeway to the disbelievers and then I seized them. So then how was MY negation [of them]?
22:45  Thus, how many a town have WE destroyed while it was defiantly wrong, and as a consequence it is lying in utter ruin. And [how many] an abandoned well and towering castle?
22:46  Have they not travelled the land, so the hearts for them be by which they reason out, or ears by which they may hear? For indeed, it is not the eyes which go blind but the hearts at their core that go blind.
22:47  They dare you to hasten with the punishment! Allah never contravenes HIS promise. Though a day in your Rabb’s perspective, is like a thousand periods of whatever you count.
22:48  How many a town have I given leeway to, while it was defiantly wrong. Then I seized it and unto ME is the end [of all journeys].
22:49  Say, “O humankind, I am only a plain warner unto you.”
22:50  So [heed the message]: Those who have embraced Faith and have done the right deeds, for them is forgiveness and a generously noble sustenance.
22:51  While those who as challengers endeavored to [put doubt] in OUR messages, they are reapers of Jaīm.
22:52  WE have not sent a messenger or a prophet before you, but that when he holds a wish, Satan interposes in his wish. Even so, Allah fully notes what Satan interposes. Then Allah instates HIS signs. Allah is ever knowing, all-wise.
22:53  [HE allows this] in order that HE may render what Satan interposes as a test for the ones with a disease in their hearts, and their hearts turn hard. Of certain, the wrongdoers are in a wide breach.
22:54  And in order that the ones given the knowledge, may know that it is the truth from your Rabb, and thus believe in it—their hearts humbly submitted to HIM. Surely, Allah is ever a guide unto a timelessly straight path, for the ones who have believed.
22:55  And they will not cease—the ones who have disbelieved through an unsettled doubt in it, until the Hour suddenly comes upon them, or the punishment of a desolate day is upon them.
22:56  On that day, the sovereign say is for Allah, HE will judge between them. Thence, those who had believed and performed the right deeds will be in gardens of bliss.
22:57  While those who had disbelieved and rejected OUR signs, for them is a humbling punishment.
22:58  And the ones who had left their homes in the cause of Allah and were killed or died in the process, Allah categorically provides them a beautiful sustenance. Surely, Allah is the best of sustainers.
22:59  HE categorically admits them to an admittance they are pleased with. Surely, Allah is ever knowing, clement.
22:60  That, and whoever retaliates in kind to what he was subjected to and thereafter is infringed upon—Allah will certainly succor him. Most certainly, Allah is ever pardoning, forgiving.
22:61  That is because Allah, HE gives passage to the night into the day, and HE gives passage to the day into the night. Of certain, Allah is all-hearing, all-seeing.
22:62  That is because Allah, HE is the Truth and that which they call out to besides Allah is falsehood and that HE is forever the exalted, the transcendent.
22:63  Have you not seen that Allah, HE sends down water from the sky, whereupon the earth turns green? Surely, Allah is unfathomably subtle, all-aware.
22:64  To HIM belongs whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is across the earth. Surely, Allah—HE is the self-sufficient ONE, the ONE worthy of all praise.
22:65  Have you not seen that Allah, HE has subjugated to you whatever is on the land, and the vessels which sail on the sea by HIS command. And HE holds up the heaven from falling upon the earth, except [what falls] by HIS permission. Surely, Allah is categorically affectionate to humanity, ever merciful.
22:66  And HE is the One who gave life to you, then HE gives you death, then HE gives life to you [again]. Surely, man is categorically ungrateful.
22:67  For every community, WE have appointed a collection of rites— they [are the specific] performers of it. So, they should not challenge you in the matter, and [continue you] to call unto your Rabb. Surely, you for certain are on guidance—straight and timeless.
22:68  And if they do argue with you, then say, “Allah! HE is best knowing about what you are doing.”
22:69  Allah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection, concerning all in which you were differing.
22:70  Do you not know that Allah knows all that is in the heavens and the earth? Of certain, that is all in an indelible record, and certainly, that is easy for Allah.
22:71  They worship short of Allah that for which HE has sent down no warrant, and that for which they have no knowledge. There is not any vindicator for the unjust.
22:72  When OUR verses are recited to them as telling proofs, you can recognize in the faces of the ones who disbelieve, the characteristic repugnance. They almost lunge at those who recite OUR verses to them. Say, “Shall I inform you of what is worse than that [repugnance of yours]? The Fire, which Allah has promised to the ones who have disbelieved. And wretched is the end.”
22:73  O humanity, a parable is set forth, so listen to it: Those you invoke other than Allah shall never create a fly, even if they were all to collaborate on it. And if the fly should snatch anything from them, they cannot recover it from it. Weak are the seeker and the sought.
22:74  They have not grasped the measure of [the almightiness of] Allah, by the right of HIS [immeasurable] measure. Of certain, Allah is ever all-powerful, almighty.
22:75  It is Allah—HE chooses messengers from angels and from men. Verily, Allah is all-hearing, all-seeing.
22:76  HE knows whatever is before them and whatever is beyond them. And unto Allah are all matters being returned.
22:77  O you who have embraced Faith, bow, and prostrate and serve your Rabb and do the good [worthy of HIS acceptance], so you may attain spiritual success. ۩
22:78  And strive in [the quest of the assent of] Allah, as is the due of striving owed to HIM. HE has designated you [to live HIS message] and HE has not placed upon you any handicap in the Faith—the spiritual legacy of your father, Abraham. HE has identified you as Muslims since ever before and in this [Revelation], so that the Messenger may be a witness to you [by his living example] and that you [by your living example] may be a witness to humanity. So, maintain the Prayers for anchor and give Zakat and hold on fast to Allah. HE is your protector forever. How excellent is the Protector and how excellent is the Helper.
