"I do not know but the respite given to you may be a trial for you (– a respite so that you may fully display your deserving His punishment), and enjoyment for a while."
`And I do not know whether it (- the respite referred to above) is meant to put you on trial or it may be affording you a (worldly) provision for a short while.
And I do not know (on my own) that this (delaying of the torment and the respite given to you) may perhaps be a trial for you, and the intention may be to provide (you) a benefit till a fixed time.
“I do not know, perhaps a reprieve is a trial for you (so that you experience and see the Truth about yourselves) and a limited benefit.”
Sayyed Abbas Sadr-Ameli
And I know not haply this (respite) may be a trial for you, and an enjoyment for a while
Al-muntakhab fi tafsir al-Qur'an al-Karim
"Nor do I know the reason for the respite granted to you people, it may be a trial to test your true belief and inclination or to give you enough rope to allow you free scope of action up to a predetermined point of time in order that you may commit yourselves -or relent and be brought to your senses-"
