Today's Ayat for Saturday, 2018-05-19 / 04 Ramadan 1439

Seek instead, by means of what God has granted thee, [the good of] the life to come, without forgetting, withal, thine own [rightful] share in this world; and do good [unto others] as God has done good unto thee; and seek not to spread corruption on earth: for, verily, God does not love the spreaders of corruption!”

-- al-Qasas 28:77 as rendered by Muhammad Asad

This is today's comment:

It is right and proper to seek our share of eternity, but we have to remember today as well.
Seek also to succeed here in this world - with good and righteous efforts - then share the results.
Don't be tempted to let profit and the illusion of success pull towards corruption and greed.

This is an OPINION.
We must always read the verse(s) for ourselves!

Today's Ayat for Friday, 2018-05-18 / 03 Ramadan 1439

You who believe, fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may be mindful of God.

-- al-Baqarah 2:183 as rendered by Abdel Haleem

2 183 ah

Now that we have passed all the possible starting days of Ramadan, based on the various methods, etc., etc., etc., it is safe to say Ramadan Mubarak! to all of our readers.

----------------

IslamAwakened has been asked to add commentary to our Today's Ayat
This is today's (somewhat extendend) comment:

Here are the main verses about fasting found in the Qur'an

  • 2:183 fasting is prescribed, as it was... (see above)
  • 2:184 fixed no of days, unless on a journey
  • 2:185 fast month of Ramadan
  • 2:187 spousal relations are permitted at night; white thread / black thread

Note the missing 2:186? We'll get back to that.
First let's expand on "...as it was prescribed for those before you"
What do we find when we examine the fasting-related teachings of those before us?

In Christianity, we find

  • Acts 13:3, 14:23 fast before important decisions
  • Luke 2:37, 5:33 fasting linked with prayer
  • 1 Corinth 7:1 - 7:5 giving up anything for God can be a fast
  • Matthew 6:16 - 6:18 dont be obvious about fasting
  • Isaiah 58 "the fast" is a long-term lifestyle
  • And the first fast in the Christian story is Jesus’ forty days in the desert, the basis for Lent

And in Judaism we see

  • Leviticus 23:26 - 23:32  the basis for Yom Kippur

Now, remember that missing 2:186?  In the middle of verses about fasting?
This is the verse wherein Allah says "if My servants ask you about Me, tell them I am near, I respond to those who call Me"
The common thread we see in all the books:  fasting is associated with prayer, with calling on our Creator.

Notice, too, that in earlier traditions, fasting is understood as "abstaining from something for the sake of Allah",
with that understanding, let's remember the very first fast:  not eating from that one tree.

We didn't do so well on that one, did we?

May all your fasts go well this year!

Remember, this is an opinion.
We must always read the verse(s) for ourselves!

Today's Ayat for Sunday, 2018-04-01 / 15 Rajab 1439

Is he who prays devoutly to God in the hours of the night, prostrating himself and standing in prayer, who is ever mindful of the life to come and hopes for the mercy of his Lord [like one who does not]? Say, Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Truly, only those endowed with understanding will take heed.

-- az-Zumar 39:9 as rendered by Wahiduddin Khan

IslamAwakened has been asked to add commentary to our Today's Ayat
This is today's comment:

We should ask our Creator, in prayer, for knowledge and guidance. Often.
We also must remember to look for His answers.
Sometimes these answers will be events in our lives, unexpectedly.
Other times the answers will come through other people
... one person's bad experiences may be advice He is passing on to you.

This is an OPINION.
We must always read the verse(s) for ourselves!

Today's Ayat for Saturday, 2018-03-31 / 14 Rajab 1439

We will show them Our signs in the universe and within their own beings until it will become manifest to them that it is the truth. Is it not enough about your Lord that He is witness to everything?

-- Fussilat 41:53 as rendered by Muhammad Taqi Usmani

IslamAwakened has been asked to add commentary to our Today's Ayat
This is today's comment:

Our Creator has promised to continue His revelations (signs, āyātinā) after this Qur'an
Some will be in the world - which we see as "discoveries"
Others will be within - increased self-awareness
... both require us to seek with open eyes, open minds, and open hearts.

Today's Ayat for Friday, 2018-03-30 / 13 Rajab 1439

God does not burden a soul more than it can bear. It has [the good] it has earned, and [the evil] it has incurred. Our Lord, do not blame us if we forget or err. Our Lord, do not make us bear a burden like those before us. Our Lord, do not make us bear what We have no strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Master, so help us against the people who deny the truth.
--
Stay away from the property of orphans, except to improve it, until he or she comes of age." Give full measure and weight in accordance with equity. We do not burden any soul with more than it is able to bear. When you voice an opinion, be just, even if it concerns a relative. Fulfill your pledge to God. This is what He has commanded you to do so that you will remember.
--
We do not burden any soul with more than it can bear. There is a record with Us which speaks the Truth and they will not be treated unjustly.

  -- al-Baqarah 2:286, al-An'am 6:152, and al-Mu'minun 23:62 as rendered by Safi Kaskas

IslamAwakened has been asked to add commentary to our Today's Ayat
This is today's comment:

Allah tells us again and again that He does not burden us with more than we can bear
Life sometimes tests our belief, even if we understand that Allah repeats Himself for a reason
Consider: those burdens we think may break us may only be breaking our own barriers
... barriers that are in us only because we hold onto them.

This is an OPINION.
We must always read the verse(s) for ourselves!
