11:1  · · Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as · John taught · his disciples.”
11:2  He said · to them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father, may your name be held in honor; · may your reign begin. ·
11:3  Give us each day · our daily bread; · ·
11:4  and forgive us · our sins, · for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us into a time of trial.’”
11:5  · He said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
11:6  since a friend of mine has come to me from a journey and I do not have anything to set before him’;
11:7  and he from inside answers, saying, ‘Do not cause me trouble; already the door has been locked and · my children are with me in · bed. I cannot get up and give you anything.’
11:8  I say to you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because · he is his friend, yet because of the prospect of being put to shame he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
11:9  “So to you I say, ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened for you.
11:10  For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who seeks finds, and for everyone who knocks it will be opened.
11:11  What · father among you, · should his son ask for a fish, · will instead of a fish, give him a snake?
11:12  Or · should he ask for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
11:13  If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father · give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
11:14  One day Jesus was casting out a demon · that was mute. · When the demon came out, the speechless man spoke and the people were amazed.
11:15  But some of them said, “By Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he casts out · demons!”
11:16  Others, · to test him, kept demanding from him a sign from heaven.
11:17  But he, knowing their · thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a house divided against a house falls.
11:18  And if Satan also · has been divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? · For you say that by Beelzebul I cast out · demons.
11:19  And if by Beelzebul I cast out · demons, by whom do · your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.
11:20  But if I by the finger of God cast out · demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
11:21  “When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are secured; ·
11:22  but when one stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, he takes away · his armor in which he has placed his trust and divides up · his spoil.
11:23  “The one who is not with me is against me; and the one who does not gather with me scatters.
11:24  “When the unclean spirit departs from a person, it travels through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding one; then it says, ‘I will return to · my house from which I departed.’
11:25  · When the spirit returns, it finds the house swept and put in order.
11:26  Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and after going in they settle down to live there. So the last state of that person has become worse than the first.”
11:27  · While · he was saying these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that carried you, and the breasts that nursed you!”
11:28  But he said, “On the contrary, blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
11:29  As the · crowds were getting larger, Jesus began to say, · “This generation is an evil generation; it looks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.
11:30  For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be · a sign to this generation.
11:31  The queen of the South will rise in the judgment with the men of this generation and will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
11:32  The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with · this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
11:33  “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a vault or under a basket, but on a lampstand, so that those who come in can see the light.
11:34  Your eye is the lamp of the body. · When · your eye is sound, then your whole · body is full of light, but when it is diseased, then · your body is full of darkness.
11:35  Therefore consider whether the ‘light’ that is in you is not darkness.
11:36  If then · your whole body is full of light, having no part of it dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp gives you light with its rays.”
11:37  When · · Jesus finished speaking, a Pharisee asked him to have a meal with him, so he went in and reclined at table.
11:38  The · Pharisee was surprised when he observed that Jesus did not wash first, before the meal.
11:39  The Lord said · to him, “Now you · Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish; but the inside of you is full of greed and wickedness.
11:40  Fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?
11:41  Rather, in connection with what is inside, you should give alms, and then everything will be clean for you.
11:42  But woe to you · Pharisees! For you tithe · mint and · rue and every kind of garden herb, yet disregard · justice and the love of God. These · you should have done, without neglecting the others.
11:43  Woe to you · Pharisees! For you love the seat of honor in the synagogues and · greetings in the marketplaces.
11:44  Woe to you! For you are like · unmarked tombs; · · · people · walk over them without realizing it.”
11:45  One of the lawyers responded · and said to him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us as well.”
11:46  Jesus · replied, “Woe to you · lawyers also! For you load · people down with burdens hard to bear, yet you yourselves will not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
11:47  Woe to you! For you build · memorials to the prophets, · but your fathers killed them.
11:48  So you are witnesses: · you approve of the deeds of your fathers, because while they killed them, you · build the memorials.
11:49  Indeed, for this reason the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles, · some of whom they will kill and persecute,’
11:50  so that the blood of all the prophets, · shed since the foundation of the world, may be charged against · this generation,
11:51  from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be charged against · this generation.
11:52  Woe to you · lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter yourselves, and have hindered those who wanted to enter.”
11:53  When he went out from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be terribly hostile, and to question him sharply about many things,
11:54  plotting against him, to catch him in something from · his mouth.
