Sayyed Abbas Sadr-Ameli rendition of Surah Those Who Set The Ranks, Drawn up in Ranks, The Rangers(as-Saffat)
---
37:1 By those who range themselves in ranks,
37:2 And those who drive away (the evils and temptations) with reproof,
37:3 And the reciters of a Remembrance (Qur ?n),
37:4 Verily your God is One,
37:5 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, and Lord of the rising-places (of sun).
37:6 Verily We have adorned the lower heaven with the adornment of the stars.
37:7 And to preserve against every rebel Satan;
37:8 They cannot listen to (the secrets of) the exalted assembly and they are thrown at from every side,
37:9 (To be) driven off, and for them is an everlasting chastisement,
37:10 Except him who snatches a fragment, and he is pursued by a piercing flame.
37:11 Then ask their opinion whether they are stronger in creation or (the others) whom we have created. Verily We created them of a sticky clay.
37:12 Nay! you wonder while they mock.
37:13 When they are admonished, they mind not,
37:14 And when they see a sign (miracle) they invite one another to scuff,
37:15 And they say: This is nothing but an open sorcery.
37:16 (They say:) When we are dead and have become dust and (rotten) bones, shall we (then) be raised up (again)?
37:17 And also our forefathers?
37:18 Say: Yes, (you all shall be raised) while you will be brought low .
37:19 Then it (the Resurrection) will only be a single cry, and behold, they begin to see (the scene of Hereafter)!
37:20 And they shall say: Woe for us! This is the Day of Judgment.
37:21 (They will be told:) This is the Day of Separation (of right and wrong), which you used to belie.
37:22 (And Allah will command the angels:) Gather you together those who were unjust and their mates and what they used to worship,
37:23 Besides Allah, and lead them (all) unto the path of Hell .
37:24 And stop them, for verily they must be questioned:
37:25 (They will be told:) How now, that you help not one another?
37:26 Nay! this day they make full submission.
37:27 And some of them shall turn to the others questioning each other.
37:28 They will say: Verily you used to come unto us, from the right side.
37:29 They answer: Nay! you (yourselves) were not believers.
37:30 And there was not for us any authority over you. Nay! You were a rebellious people!
37:31 So, now the word of our Lord has been proved against us that verily we shall taste (the chastisement).
37:32 So we misled you, for verily we were ourselves astray.
37:33 So verily they (both) on that Day are sharers in the (Divine) chastisement.
37:34 Verily thus do We deal with the guilty.
37:35 Verily they used to be proud when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah .
37:36 And said: Shall we give up our gods for the sake of a mad poet?
37:37 Nay: he has come with the Truth and verified the (former) messengers.
37:38 Verily you will taste the painful punishment, (too).
37:39 And you are not requited except (for) what you were doing.
37:40 Save the servants of Allah, the purified ones,
37:41 For them is a known sustenance,
37:42 (Kinds of) fruits, and they shall be highly honoured,
37:43 In the gardens bountiful,
37:44 Upon thrones facing each other.
37:45 Round will go unto them a cup (of wine) from a clear spring,
37:46 Crystal-white, delicious to the drinkers,
37:47 Free from headiness, nor will they suffer intoxication from it.
37:48 And with them will be chaste women; restraining their glances,
37:49 As if they were (as white as) eggs (secured) hidden.
37:50 Then shall some of them advance to others, questioning each other.
37:51 One of them will say: Verily I had an intimate companion (in the world),
37:52 Who used to say: Are you really among the believers (of Hereafter)?
37:53 When we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then in fact be brought in account?
37:54 He says: Can you take a look?
37:55 Then he looks and sees him in the midst of Hell.
37:56 He says: By Allah! You had almost caused me to perish;
37:57 And had it not been the bounty of my Lord, certainly would I have been brought into (the Hell) .
37:58 Is it that we do not die,
37:59 Save our first death; and we shall not be chastised?
37:60 Verily this is the mighty triumph,
37:61 And for the like of this let the workers work.
37:62 Is that the better entertainment or the Tree of Zaqq?m?
37:63 Verily We have appointed it as a trial for the unjust.
37:64 Verily, it is a tree that grows in the bottom of the Hell.
37:65 The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of devils,
37:66 Then verily they eat from it and fill (their bellies with it.
37:67 Then verily on Top of it they will have a mixture made of boiling water.
37:68 Then verily their return shall be unto the Hell.
37:69 Verily they found their fathers on the wrong path.
37:70 So in their footsteps they are being hastened on.
37:71 And indeed most of the ancient went astray before them.
37:72 And certainly We sent among them warners.
37:73 Then see how was the end of those warned,
37:74 Except the servants of Allah, the purified ones.
37:75 And indeed Noah did call upon Us, and the most excellent answerer (of prayer are We).
37:76 And We delivered him and his people from the great distress,
37:77 And We made (only) his progeny the survivors.
37:78 And We perpetuated to him (praise) among the later generations.
37:79 Peace be on Noah among the nations.
37:80 Verily thus do We recompense the doers of good.
37:81 Verily he was (one) of Our faithful servants.
37:82 Then We drowned the others.
37:83 And verily Abraham was of his persuasion.
37:84 When he came unto his Lord with a sound (pure) heart.
37:85 When he said to his father and his people: What is it that you worship?
37:86 Is it a falsehood gods other than Allah that you desire?
37:87 What is then your idea about the Lord of the Worlds?
37:88 Then he glanced, casting glance at the stars,
37:89 Then he said: Verily I am sick (and I cannot participate in your festival).
37:90 So they went away from him, turning back.
37:91 Then he turned unto their gods secretly and (mockingly) said: Why do you not eat?
37:92 What is the matter with you that you do not speak?
37:93 Then he turned against them in secret, striking (them) with the right hand.
37:94 So they (people) advanced towards him hastening.
37:95 He said: Do you worship what you (yourselves) hew out?
37:96 While Allah has created you and what you make.
37:97 They said: Build for him a furnace, then cast him into the burning fire .
37:98 So they desired a plot against him, but We made them lower ones.
37:99 And he said: Verily, I am going unto my Lord, He will guide me .
37:100 My Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!
37:101 So We gave him the glad tidings of a forbearing boy,
37:102 And when he (the son) reached (the age of working) with him he said: O my son! Verily I see in a dream that I shall sacrifice you. Now see what is your view. He said: O my father! Do what you are commanded; you will find me, Allah willing, of the patient ones .
37:103 So when they both submitted (to Our command) and he (Abraham) laid him (the son) prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice),
37:104 And We called out to him: O Abraham!
37:105 Indeed you have proved true the dream; verily thus do We reward the doers of good!
37:106 This is indeed the manifest trial.
37:107 And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.
37:108 And We left (praise) for him among generations (to come) in later times.
37:109 Peace be on Abraham.
37:110 Thus do We recompense the doers of good,
37:111 Verily he was (one) of Our believing servants.
37:112 And We gave him the glad tidings of Isaac, a prophet among the righteous ones.
37:113 And We bestowed Our blessings on him and on Isaac, and of their offspring are the doers of good, and (also) those who are clearly unjust to their own selves.
37:114 We bestowed Our favour on Moses and Aaron.
37:115 And We delivered them both and their people from the great distress.
37:116 And We helped them so that they were the victors (over their enemies).
37:117 And We gave them both the Book making things clear.
37:118 And We guided them both on the right way.
37:119 And We left (praise) for them both among the later generations.
37:120 Peace be on Moses and Aaron.
37:121 Verily thus do We reward the doers of good.
37:122 Verily they were both of Our faithful servants,
37:123 And verily Ely?s was of the apostles.
37:124 When he said to his people: Will you not be in owe (of Allah)?
37:125 Do you call on Ba l and abandon the best of the creators?
37:126 Allah is your Lord and the Lord of fathers of old.
37:127 But they belied him, therefore they shall certainly be brought (to Hell).
37:128 Except for Allah s sincere servants;
37:129 And We left (praise) for him among the later generations.
37:130 Peace be on Ily?sin (Ely?s).
37:131 Verily thus do We reward the doers of good.
37:132 Verily he was (one) of Our faithful servants.
37:137 And verily you pass by them in the morning.
37:138 And at night; do you not then understand?
37:139 Verily Jonah was (one) of the Envoys,
37:140 When he ran away to the laden ship.
37:141 So he cast lots, and was of the rebutted,
37:142 Then the fish swallowed him while he blamed himself;
37:143 So had he not been of those that glorify Allah,
37:144 He would have tarried in its belly until the Day of Resurrection
37:145 But We cast him forth on the naked shore while he was sick,
37:146 And We caused to grow over him a plant of gourds.
37:147 And We sent him to a hundred thousand (people) or more.
37:148 And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment for a while.
37:149 Then ask them whether your Lord has daughters and they have sons.
37:150 Or did We create the angels females while they were witnesses?
37:151 Beware! Verily it is of their own lie that they say.
37:152 Allah has begotten, and verily they are liars.
37:153 Has He chosen daughters in preference to sons?
37:154 What has happened to you, how is it that you judge?
37:155 Will you not then receive admonition?
37:156 Or have you a clear authority?
37:157 Then bring your book if you are truthful.
37:158 And they have set up a kinship between Him and the jinn, while the jinn know (quite well) that they shall surely be brought up (to account).
37:159 Glory be to Allah! (He is free) from what they ascribe (to Him)!
37:160 Except for Allah s sincere servants.
37:161 So verily you and what you worship,
37:162 Can never excite (anyone) against Him.
37:163 Except such as are (themselves) going to the blazing Fire.
37:164 And (the angels say:) There is not (any one) of us, but for him is an assigned place,
37:165 And verily we are they who range ourselves in order.
37:166 And verily we are they who celebrate His glory.
37:167 And verily they used to say:
37:168 If we had had but a reminder from the men of old.
37:169 We would certainly have been Allah s sincere servants.
37:170 Then they disbelieved in it, so soon they will know.
37:171 And certainly Our word has already gone forth for Our servants, the apostles:
37:172 Verily they shall be the assisted ones.
37:173 And verily Our host alone shall be the victorious ones.
37:174 So turn you away from them for a time,
37:175 And see them, for they soon shall see (their retribution)
37:176 Do they seek to hasten Our chastisement?
37:177 But when it shall descend in their courtyard, how evil will be the morning of them that are warned!
37:178 And turn you away from them for a time.
37:179 And see you, for they shall soon see (their fate).
37:180 Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of Honour, far above that which they ascribe (unto Him).
37:181 And peace be upon the messengers,
37:182 And (all) praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.
