Transliteration Thalika bi-annahum shaqqoo Allaha warasoolahu waman yushaqqi Allaha fa-inna Allaha shadeedu alAAiqabi

Generally Accepted Translations of the Meaning
Muhammad Asad this, because they cut themselves off from God and His Apostle: and as for him who cuts himself off from God and His Apostle - verily, God is severe in retribution!
M. M. Pickthall That is because they were opposed to Allah and His messenger; and whoso is opposed to Allah, (for him) verily Allah is stern in reprisal.
Shakir That is because they acted in opposition to Allah and His Messenger, and whoever acts in opposition to Allah, then surely Allah is severe in retributing (evil).
Yusuf Ali That is because they resisted Allah and His Messenger: and if any one resists Allah, verily Allah is severe in Punishment.
[Al-Muntakhab] This train of events succeeding one another were occasioned on account of their disobedience to Allah and His Messenger; and he who disobeys Allah shall realize that He punishes severely.
[Progressive Muslims] This is because they challenged God and His messenger. And whosoever challenges God, then God is severe in punishment.
Abdel Haleem because they set themselves against God and His Messenger: God is stern in punishment towards anyone who sets himself against Him.

Bijan Moeinian The whole event took place for the simple reason that the Jews resisted God and His messenger. Know that whoever opposes God will be subject to a sever punishment.
Faridul Haque This is because they remained opposed to Allah and His Noble Messenger; and whoever remains opposed to Allah, (and His Noble Messenger) - then indeed Allah’s punishment is severe.
Hasan Al-Fatih Qaribullah because they broke their promise with Allah and His Messenger; and whosoever breaks their promise with Allah Allah is Stern in retribution.
Maulana Muhammad Ali That is because they were opposed to Allah and His Messenger, and whoever is opposed to Allah, surely Allah is Severe in retribution.
