37:1 سورة الصافات بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ٛــــ والصافات صفا

AsadCONSIDER these [messages] ranged in serried ranks, [Regarding the adjurative particle wa and my rendering it as "Consider", see first half of note on 74:32. Most of the classical commentators assume that verses 1-3 refer to angels - an assumption which Abu Muslim al-Isfahani (as quoted by Razi) rejects, stating that the passage refers to the true believers among human beings. However, Razi advances yet another (and, to my mind, most convincing) interpretation, suggesting that what is meant here are the messages (ayat) of the Quran, which - in the commentator's words - "deal with various subjects, some speaking of the evidence of God's oneness or of the evidence of His omniscience, omnipotence and wisdom, and some setting forth the evidence of [the truth of] prophetic revelation or of resurrection, while some deal with man's duties and the laws [relating thereto], and yet others are devoted to the teaching of high moral principles; and these messages are arranged in accordance with a coherent system above all [need of] change or alteration, so that they resemble beings or things standing `in serried ranks'." ]



as-Saffat 037:002

37:2 فالزاجرات زجرا


TransliterationFaalzzajirati zajran
LiteralSo the preventing/deterring , preventing/deterring/ousting .

Yusuf AliAnd so are strong in repelling (evil),
PickthalAnd those who drive away (the wicked) with reproof
Arberry and the scarers scaring
ShakirThen those who drive away with reproof,
Sarwarby those who drive away the devil (to protect Our revelation),
KhalifaThe blamers of those to be blamed.
Hilali/KhanBy those (angels) who drive the clouds in a good way.

37:4 ان الهكم لواحد

LiteralLord (of) the skies/space and the earth/Planet Earth and what (is) between them (B), and Lord (of) the sun rises/easts.

Yusuf AliLord of the heavens and of the earth and all between them, and Lord of every point at the rising of the sun!

37:6 انا زينا السماء الدنيا بزينة الكواكب


TransliterationInna zayyanna alssamaa alddunya bizeenatin alkawakibi
LiteralThat We decorated/beautified the sky/space (of) the present world with the stars'/planets' decoration/beauty .

Yusuf AliWe have indeed decked the lower heaven with beauty (in) the stars,-
PickthalLo! We have adorned the lowest heaven with an ornament, the planets;
Arberry We have adorned the lower heaven with the adornment of the stars
ShakirSurely We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment, the stars,
SarwarWe have decked the lower heavens with stars

as-Saffat 037:007

37:7 وحفظا من كل شيطان مارد


TransliterationWahifthan min kulli shaytanin maridin
LiteralAnd a protection/guarding from every/each rebellious/mutinous devil.

Yusuf Ali(For beauty) and for guard against all obstinate rebellious evil spirits,
PickthalWith security from every froward devil.
Arberry and to preserve against every rebel Satan;
ShakirAnd (there is) a safeguard against every rebellious Shaitan.
Sarwarto protect them from the rebellious satan.
KhalifaWe guarded it from every evil devil.
Hilali/KhanAnd to guard against every rebellious devil.

Malikand have secured it against all obstinate rebellious Satans.[7]

as-Saffat 037:008

37:8 لايسمعون الى الملا الاعلى ويقذفون من كل جانب


TransliterationLa yassammaAAoona ila almala-i al-aAAla wayuqthafoona min kulli janibin
LiteralThey do not hear/listen (E) to the nobles/assembly the highest/mightiest/most dignified, and they be thrown/hurled from every/each side/direction.

Yusuf Ali(So) they should not strain their ears in the direction of the Exalted Assembly but be cast away from every side,
PickthalThey cannot listen to the Highest Chiefs for they are pelted from every side,
Arberry they listen not to the High Council, for they are pelted from every side,
ShakirThey cannot listen to the exalted assembly and they are thrown at from every side,
SarwarThe devils cannot hear those high above. They would be struck from all sides
KhalifaThey cannot spy on the High Society; they get bombarded from every side.

QXPRepelled faraway from the Truth, the 'occult sciences' despite their boisterous claims, can get not a hint of what Divine Revelation is.
Maulana AliThey cannot listen to the exalted assembly and they are reproached from every side,
Free MindsThey cannot listen to the command up high; and they are bombarded from every side.
Qaribullah so they cannot listen to the High Assembly, for they are pelted from every side.

George Salethat they may not listen to the discourse of the exalted princes, -- for they are darted at from every side,
JM RodwellThat they overhear not what passeth in the assembly on high, for they are darted at from every side,

Asad[so that] they [who seek to learn the unknowable] should not be able to overhear the host on high, [I.e., the angelic forces, whose "speech" is a metonym for God's decrees.] but shall be repelled from all sides,



as-Saffat 037:009

37:9 دحورا ولهم عذاب واصب


TransliterationDuhooran walahum AAathabun wasibun
LiteralExpelled/driven away , and for them (is) a permanent/continuous/lasting torture.

Yusuf AliRepulsed, for they are under a perpetual penalty,
PickthalOutcast, and theirs is a perpetual torment;
Arberry rejected, and theirs is an everlasting chastisement,
ShakirBeing driven off, and for them is a perpetual chastisement,
Sarwarand driven away to suffer the necessary torment.
KhalifaThey have been condemned; they have incurred an eternal retribution.
Hilali/KhanOutcast, and theirs is a constant (or painful) torment.
H/K/SaheehRepelled; and for them is a constant punishment,
Malikthey are repulsed and are under a constant chastisement.[9]

as-Saffat 037:010

37:10 الا من خطف الخطفة فاتبعه شهاب ثاقب


TransliterationIlla man khatifa alkhatfata faatbaAAahu shihabun thaqibun
LiteralExcept who snatched the one snatch, so a light from a fire source/a star lit/ignited/penetrating followed him.

Yusuf AliExcept such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming fire, of piercing brightness.
PickthalSave him who snatcheth a fragment, and there pursueth him a piercing flame.
Arberry except such as snatches a fragment, and he is pursued by a piercing flame.
ShakirExcept him who snatches off but once, then there follows him a brightly shining flame.
SarwarSome of them who stealthily steal words from the heavens are pursued by a glistening flame.
KhalifaIf any of them ventures to charge the outer limits, he gets struck with a fierce projectile.
Hilali/KhanExcept such as snatch away something by stealing and they are pursued by a flaming fire of piercing brightness.
H/K/SaheehExcept one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness].
MalikEavesdroppers are persuaded by a flaming fire of piercing brightness.[10]
QXPEven if a thing of their conjecture comes to pass, they are pursued by a Flame of Brightness. (The Divine Revelation exposes the claimants to the 'occult sciences' (18:22), (26:210-212), (52:38), (67:5), (72: 8-9)).
Maulana AliExcept him who snatches away but once, then there follows him a brightly shining flame.
Free MindsAny of them who snatches something away, he is pursued by a piercing flame.
Qaribullah except such as snatches a fragment, and he is pursued by a piercing flame.

George Saleexcept him who catcheth a word by stealth, and is pursued by a shining flame.
JM RodwellWhile, if one steal a word by stealth, a glistening flame pursueth him.

Asadbut if anyone [Lit., "excepting [or "except that"] anyone who ...", etc. However, as pointed out by some authorities (e.g., Mughni), the particle illa is occasionally synonymous with the simple conjunction Wa, which in this case has the significance of "but".] does succeed in snatching a glimpse [of such knowledge], he is [henceforth] pursued by a piercing flame. [For the meaning of this phrase, see note on 15:18. After the stress on God's oneness in verses 4-5, the passage comprising verses 6-10 points to the fact that human beings are precluded from really grasping the variety and depth of the universe created by Him. We have here an echo of 34:9 - "Are they, then, not aware of how little of the sky and the earth lies open before them, and how much is hidden from them?" - and, thus, a new, oblique approach to the theme of resurrection, which is taken up in the sequence in the form of an indirect question.]



as-Saffat 037:011

37:11 فاستفتهم اهم اشد خلقا ام من خلقنا انا خلقناهم من طين لازب


TransliterationFaistaftihim ahum ashaddu khalqan am man khalaqna inna khalaqnahum min teenin lazibin
LiteralSo ask/take their opinion , are they a stronger creation, or who We created? That We created them from very sticky mud/clay .

Yusuf AliJust ask their opinion: are they the more difficult to create, or the (other) beings We have created? Them have We created out of a sticky clay!
PickthalThen ask them (O Muhammad): Are they stronger as a creation, or those (others) whom we have created? Lo! We created them of plastic clay.
Arberry So ask them for a pronouncement -- Are they stronger in constitution, or those We created? We created them of clinging clay.
ShakirThen ask them whether they are stronger in creation or those (others) whom We have created. Surely We created them of firm clay.
Sarwar(Muhammad), ask them, "Have they (people) been created stronger than what We have created?" We have created them from moist clay.
KhalifaAsk them, "Are they more difficult to create, or the other creations?" We created them from wet mud.
Hilali/KhanThen ask them (i.e. these polytheists, O Muhammad SAW): "Are they stronger as creation, or those (others like the heavens and the earth and the mountains, etc.) whom We have created?" Verily, We created them of a sticky clay.
H/K/SaheehThen inquire of them, [O Muúammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created men from sticky clay.
MalikAsk them: "What is more difficult - their creation or the rest of Our creation? - Them We have created out of a sticky clay.[11]
QXPAnd ask them to enlighten you, "What is more difficult and stronger - their creation or the rest of Our creation in the multiform Universe? Them (the humans) We have only created out of a sticky clay.
Maulana AliSo ask them whether they are stronger in creation or those (others) whom We have created. Surely We created them of firm clay.
Free MindsSo ask them: "Are they the more powerful creation, or the others We created?" We have created them from sticky mud.
Qaribullah So ask them, are they stronger in constitution, or those whom We have created. We have created them of sticky clay.

George SaleAsk the Meccans therefore, whether they be stronger by nature, or the angels whom We have created? We have surely created them of stiff clay.
JM RodwellAsk the Meccans then, Are they, or the angels whom we have made, the stronger creation? Aye, of coarse clay have we created them.

AsadAND NOW ask those [who deny the truth] to enlighten thee: Were they more difficult to create than all those [untold marvels] that We have created? - for, behold, them have We created out of [mere] clay commingled with water! [I.e., out of primitive substances existing in their elementary forms in and on the earth (see 23:12) - substances which are as nothing when compared with the complexity of "the heavens and the earth and all that is between them": hence, man's individual resurrection is as nothing when compared with the creation of the multiform universe.]



as-Saffat 037:012

37:12 بل عجبت ويسخرون


TransliterationBal AAajibta wayaskharoona
LiteralBut you wondered/were astonished/were surprised, and they humiliate/mock/undermine/ridicule .

Yusuf AliTruly dost thou marvel, while they ridicule,
PickthalNay, but thou dost marvel when they mock
Arberry Nay, thou marvellest; and they scoff
ShakirNay! you wonder while they mock,
Sarwar(Muhammad), you will be surprised that they still mock (God's revelations).
KhalifaWhile you are awed, they mock.
Hilali/KhanNay, you (O Muhammad SAW) wondered (at their insolence) while they mock (at you and at the Quran).
H/K/SaheehBut you wonder, while they mock,
MalikYou marvel at the wonders of Allah’s creation, while they ridicule at it.[12]
QXPNay, but whereas you (O Prophet) marvel at the Universe, they mock - and again you marvel at their mocking!
Maulana AliNay, thou wonderest, while they mock,
Free MindsWhile you were awed, they simply mocked.
Qaribullah No, you marvel, while they scoff.

George SaleThou wondrest at God's power and their obstinacy; but they mock at the arguments urged to convince them:
JM RodwellBut while thou marvellest they mock;

AsadNay, but whereas thou dost marvel, they [only] scoff; [I.e., at God's creative power as well as at the blind arrogance of those who deny it.]



as-Saffat 037:013

37:13 واذا ذكروا لايذكرون


TransliterationWa-itha thukkiroo la yathkuroona
LiteralAnd if they were reminded, they do not mention/remember .

Yusuf AliAnd, when they are admonished, pay no heed,-
PickthalAnd heed not when they are reminded,
Arberry and, when reminded, do not remember
ShakirAnd when they are reminded, they mind not,
SarwarThey pay no attention when they are reminded
KhalifaWhen reminded, they take no heed.
Hilali/KhanAnd when they are reminded, they pay no attention.

as-Saffat 037:014

37:14 واذا راوا اية يستسخرون


TransliterationWa-itha raaw ayatan yastaskhiroona
LiteralAnd if they saw/understood an evidence/sign/verse, they humiliate/mock/ridicule/undermine.

Yusuf AliAnd, when they see a Sign, turn it to mockery,
PickthalAnd seek to scoff when they behold a portent.
Arberry and, when they see a sign, would scoff;
ShakirAnd when they see a sign they incite one another to scoff,
Sarwarand when they see a miracle, they mock
KhalifaWhen they see proof, they ridicule it.
Hilali/KhanAnd when they see an Ayah (a sign, a proof, or an evidence) from Allah, they mock at it.

as-Saffat 037:015

37:15 وقالوا ان هذا الا سحر مبين


TransliterationWaqaloo in hatha illa sihrun mubeenun
LiteralAnd they said: "That truly this (is) except clear/evident magic/sorcery.

Yusuf AliAnd say, "This is nothing but evident sorcery!
PickthalAnd they say: Lo! this is mere magic;
Arberry and they say, 'This is nothing but manifest sorcery.
ShakirAnd they say: This is nothing but clear magic:
Sarwarit and say, "It is only plain magic".
KhalifaThey say, "This is obviously magic!
Hilali/KhanAnd they say: "This is nothing but evident magic!
H/K/SaheehAnd say, "This is not but obvious magic.
Malikand say: "This is nothing but plain sorcery.[15]
QXPAnd of the Revelation they say, "This is nothing but magical eloquence."

Qaribullah and say: 'This is nothing but clear sorcery! '

as-Saffat 037:016

37:16 ءاذا متنا وكنا ترابا وعظاما ائنا لمبعوثون


TransliterationA-itha mitna wakunna turaban waAAithaman a-inna lamabAAoothoona
LiteralIs (it that) if we died and we were dust and bones, are we being resurrected/revived (E)?

Yusuf Ali"What! when we die, and become dust and bones, shall we (then) be raised up (again)
PickthalWhen we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised (again)?
Arberry What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up?

37:17 او اباؤنا الاولون


TransliterationAwa abaona al-awwaloona
LiteralOr our fathers the first/beginners?"

PickthalSay (O Muhammad): Ye, in truth; and ye will be brought low.
Arberry Say: 'Yes, and in all lowliness.'
ShakirSay: Aye! and you shall be abject.
SarwarSay, "You will certainly be brought back to life in disgrace".
KhalifaSay, "Yes, you will be forcibly summoned."

LiteralSo but it is a one cry to drive out , so then they are looking/seeing .

Yusuf AliThen it will be a single (compelling) cry; and behold, they will begin to see!
PickthalThere is but one Shout, and lo! they behold,
Arberry For it is only a single scaring, then behold, they are watching
ShakirSo it shall only be a single cry, when lo! they shall see.
SarwarThe Day of Judgment will come within a single roar and they will remain gazing at it.
KhalifaAll it takes is one nudge, whereupon they (stand up) looking.
Hilali/KhanIt will be a single Zajrah (shout (i.e. the second blowing of the Trumpet)), and behold, they will be staring!
H/K/SaheehIt will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing.

as-Saffat 037:020

37:20 وقالوا ياويلنا هذا يوم الدين


TransliterationWaqaloo ya waylana hatha yawmu alddeeni
LiteralAnd they said: "Oh our calamity/scandal that, it is the Judgment Day/Resurrection Day ."

Yusuf AliThey will say, "Ah! Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment!"
PickthalAnd say: Ah, woe for us! This is the Day of Judgment.
Arberry and they say, 'Woe, alas for us! This is the Day of Doom.'
ShakirAnd they shall say: O woe to us! this is the day of requital.
SarwarThey will say, "Woe to us!" (They will be told), "This is the day of receiving recompense".
KhalifaThey will say, "Woe to us; this is the Day of Judgment."
Hilali/KhanThey will say: "Woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense!"
H/K/SaheehThey will say, "O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense."
MalikAh, woe to us! They shall exclaim, "this is the Day of Judgement!"[20]

as-Saffat 037:021

37:21 هذا يوم الفصل الذي كنتم به تكذبون


TransliterationHatha yawmu alfasli allathee kuntum bihi tukaththiboona
LiteralThat (is) the Judgment Day/Separation Day/Resurrection Day which you were with it lying/denying/falsifying.

Yusuf Ali(A voice will say,) "This is the Day of Sorting Out, whose truth ye (once) denied!"
PickthalThis is the Day of Separation, which ye used to deny.
Arberry 'This is the Day of Decision, even that you cried lies to.
ShakirThis is the day of the judgment which you called a lie.
SarwarThis is the Day of Judgment in which you disbelieved.
KhalifaThis is the day of decision that you used to disbelieve in.
Hilali/Khan(It will be said): "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny."
H/K/Saheeh[They will be told], "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny."

Maulana AliThis is the day of Judgment, which you called a lie.

Qaribullah This is the Day of Decision which you belied.

George Salethis is the day of distinction between the righteous and the wicked, which ye rejected as a falsehood.
JM RodwellThis is the day of decision which ye gainsaid as an untruth."

Asad[And they will be told:] "This is the Day of Distinction [between the true and the false - the Day] [See note on 77:13.] which you were wont to call a lie!"



as-Saffat 037:022

37:22 احشروا الذين ظلموا وازواجهم وماكانوا يعبدون


TransliterationOhshuroo allatheena thalamoo waazwajahum wama kanoo yaAAbudoona
LiteralGather those who were unjust/oppressive and their spouses , and what they were worshipping.

Yusuf Ali"Bring ye up", it shall be said, "The wrong-doers and their wives, and the things they worshipped-
Pickthal(And it is said unto the angels): Assemble those who did wrong, together with their wives and what they used to worship
Arberry Muster those who did evil, their wives, and that they were serving,
ShakirGather together those who were unjust and their associates, and what they used to worship
Sarwar(God will command the angels), "Gather together the unjust, their spouses, and what they had worshipped

QXP"Bring you up", it will be said, "The transgressors and their companions and the leaders whom they obeyed,
Maulana AliGather together those who did wrong and their associates, and what they worshipped

Qaribullah Gather together the evildoers, their wives, and that they were worshipping,

George SaleGather together those who have acted unjustly, and their comrades, and the idols which they worshipped

Asad[And God will thus command:] "Assemble all those who were bent on evildoing, together with others of their ilk [According to almost all of the earliest authorities - including Umar ibn al-Khattab, Abd Allah ibn Abbas, Qatadah, Mujahid, As-Suddi, Said ibn Jubayr, Al-Hasan al-Basri, etc., - the expression azwaj denotes here "people resembling one another [in their dispositions]", or "people of the same kind" or "of the same ilk".] and [with] all that they were wont to worship



as-Saffat 037:023

37:23 من دون الله فاهدوهم الى صراط الجحيم


TransliterationMin dooni Allahi faihdoohum ila sirati aljaheemi
LiteralFrom other than God, so guide them to the Hell's road/way.

Yusuf Ali"Besides Allah, and lead them to the Way to the (Fierce) Fire!
PickthalInstead of Allah, and lead them to the path to hell;
Arberry apart from God, and guide them unto the path of Hell!
ShakirBesides Allah, then lead them to the way to hell.
Sarwarbesides God, and show them the way of hell.
Khalifabeside GOD, and guide them to the path of Hell.

37:24 وقفوهم انهم مسؤولون


TransliterationWaqifoohum innahum masooloona
LiteralAnd stop/suspend them , that they are questioned.

Yusuf Ali"But stop them, for they must be asked:
PickthalAnd stop them, for they must be questioned.
Arberry And halt them, to be questioned:
ShakirAnd stop them, for they shall be questioned:
SarwarStop them. They must be questioned."
KhalifaStop them, and ask them:
Hilali/Khan"But stop them, verily they are to be questioned.
H/K/SaheehAnd stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned."
MalikWhen they will all be gathered and angels will start pushing them towards hell, Allah shall say: "Stop for a while, they have to be questioned:[24]
QXPHalt them! For, they must be questioned.
Maulana AliAnd stop them, for they shall be questioned:

Qaribullah And halt them so that they may be questioned.

as-Saffat 037:025

37:25 مالكم لاتناصرون


TransliterationMa lakum la tanasaroona
LiteralAnd what (is it) for you, you do not give victory/aid?

Yusuf Ali"'What is the matter with you that ye help not each other?'"
PickthalWhat aileth you that ye help not one another?
Arberry "Why help you not one another?"
ShakirWhat is the matter with you that you do not help each other?
SarwarThey will be asked, "Why do you not help each other?".
Khalifa"Why do you not help one another?"
Hilali/Khan"What is the matter with you? Why do you not help one another (as you used to do in the world)?"
H/K/Saheeh[They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?"

as-Saffat 037:026

37:26 بل هم اليوم مستسلمون


TransliterationBal humu alyawma mustaslimoona
LiteralBut they are the day/today submitting/surrendering.

Yusuf AliNay, but that day they shall submit (to Judgment);
PickthalNay, but this day they make full submission.
Arberry No indeed; but today they resign themselves in submission
ShakirNay! on that day they shall be submissive.
SarwarIn fact, on that day they will be submissive.
KhalifaThey will be, on that day, totally submitting.
Hilali/KhanNay, but that Day they shall surrender,
H/K/SaheehBut they, that Day, are in surrender.
MalikNay! On that Day they shall all be submissive.[26]
QXPNay, but this Day they make full submission.
Maulana AliNay, on that day they will be submissive.

as-Saffat 037:027

37:27 واقبل بعضهم على بعض يتساءلون


TransliterationWaaqbala baAAduhum AAala baAAdin yatasaaloona
LiteralAnd some of them approached/came on (to) some, they ask/question each other.

Yusuf AliAnd they will turn to one another, and question one another.
PickthalAnd some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.
Arberry and advance one upon another, asking each other questions.
ShakirAnd some of them shall advance towards others, questioning each other.
SarwarThey will turn to each other saying,
KhalifaThey will come to each other, questioning and blaming one another.
Hilali/KhanAnd they will turn to one another and question one another.
H/K/SaheehAnd they will approach one another blaming each other.
MalikSome of them will step forward to question one another.[27]
QXPAnd they will turn to one another asking, demanding.
Maulana AliAnd some of them will turn to others mutually questioning --
Free MindsAnd some of them came to each other, questioning.
Qaribullah and approach each other with questions,

George SaleAnd they shall draw nigh unto one another, and shall dispute among themselves.
JM RodwellAnd shall address one another with mutual reproaches.

Asadbut [since it will be too late,] they will turn upon one another, demanding of each other [to relieve them of the burden of their past sins]. [Cf. the contrasting - though verbally identical - passage in verses 50 ff. of the present surah. Whereas in the latter instance the verb yatasa alun has its primary connotation of "asking one another [about something]", it signifies here "demanding [something] of one another" - as the sequence shows, to assume responsibility for their erstwhile denial of the truth.]



as-Saffat 037:028

37:28 قالوا انكم كنتم تاتوننا عن اليمين


TransliterationQaloo innakum kuntum ta/toonana AAani alyameeni
LiteralThey said: "That you were coming to us from the right (side)."

Yusuf AliThey will say: "It was ye who used to come to us from the right hand (of power and authority)!"
PickthalThey say: Lo! ye used to come unto us, imposing, (swearing that ye spoke the truth).
Arberry These say, 'Why, you of old would come to us from the right hand.'
ShakirThey shall say: Surely you used to come to us from the right side.
SarwarIt was you who tried to mislead us from righteousness.
KhalifaThey will say (to their leaders), "You used to come to us from the right side."
Hilali/KhanThey will say: "It was you who used to come to us from the right side (i.e. from the right side of one of us and beautify for us every evil, order us for polytheism, and stop us from the truth i.e. Islamic Monotheism and from every good deed)."
H/K/SaheehThey will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right."
MalikThe followers will say to their leaders: "It was you who used to come at us from the right hand and forced us towards the wrong way."[28]
QXPSome will say, "You used to approach us in power."
Maulana AliSaying: Surely you used to come to us from the right side.
Free MindsThey said: "You used to entice us from the right side."
Qaribullah saying: 'You used to come to us from the right hand. '

George SaleAnd the seduced shall say unto those who seduced them, verily ye came unto us with presages of prosperity;
JM RodwellThey shall say, "In sooth, ye came to us in well-omened sort:"

AsadSome [of them] will say: "Behold, you were wont to approach us [deceptively] from the right!" [I.e., "claiming that what you were asking us to do was right and good". The idiomatic phrase "approaching one from the right" is more or less synonymous with "pretending to give a morally good advice", as well as "approaching another person from a position of power and influence" (Zamakhshari).]



as-Saffat 037:029

37:29 قالوا بل لم تكونوا مؤمنين


TransliterationQaloo bal lam takoonoo mu/mineena
LiteralThey said: "But you were not being believing."

Yusuf AliThey will reply: "Nay, ye yourselves had no Faith!
PickthalThey answer: Nay, but ye (yourselves) were not believers.
Arberry Those say, 'No; on the contrary, you were not believers;
ShakirThey shall say: Nay, you (yourselves) were not believers;
SarwarOthers will respond, "It was you who did not want to have any faith.
KhalifaThey will respond, "It is you who were not believers.
Hilali/KhanThey will reply: "Nay, you yourselves were not believers.
H/K/SaheehThe oppressors will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers,
MalikThey will reply: "Nay! But it was you who had no faith.[29]
QXPThe leaders will reply, "Nay, it were you yourself who were devoid of Faith.
Maulana AliThey will say: Nay, you (yourselves) were not believers.
Free MindsThey replied: "No, it was you who were not believers."
Qaribullah But they reply: 'Rather, you were not believers.

George Saleand the seducers shall answer, nay, rather ye were not true believers:
JM RodwellBut they will answer, "Nay, it was ye who would not believe;

Asad[To which] the others will reply: "Nay, you yourselves were bereft of all faith!



as-Saffat 037:030

37:30 وماكان لنا عليكم من سلطان بل كنتم قوما طاغين


TransliterationWama kana lana AAalaykum min sultanin bal kuntum qawman tagheena
LiteralAnd (there) was not from power/control for us over you, but you were a tyrannizing/arrogant nation.

Yusuf Ali"Nor had we any authority over you. Nay, it was ye who were a people in obstinate rebellion!
PickthalWe had no power over you, but ye were wayward folk.
Arberry we had no authority over you; no, you were an insolent people.
ShakirAnd we had no authority over you, but you were an inordinate people;
SarwarWe had no authority over you, in fact, you were a rebellious people.
Khalifa"We never had any power over you; it is you who were wicked.
Hilali/Khan"And we had no authority over you. Nay! But you were transgressing people (disobedient, polytheists, and disbelievers).
H/K/SaheehAnd we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people.
MalikWe had no power over you, the fact is that you were an inordinate people;[30]
QXPAnd we had no power at all over you. Nay, you were a people of unrestrained conduct."
Maulana AliAnd we had no authority over you, but you were an inordinate people.
Free Minds"And we never had any power over you, but you were a wicked people."
Qaribullah We had no authority over you, but you were an insolent nation.

George SaleFor we had no power over you to compel you; but ye were people who voluntarily transgressed:
JM Rodwelland we had no power whatever over you. Nay, ye were people given to transgress;

AsadMoreover, we had no power at all over you: nay, you were people filled with overweening arrogance!



as-Saffat 037:031

37:31 فحق علينا قول ربنا انا لذائقون


TransliterationFahaqqa AAalayna qawlu rabbina inna latha-iqoona
LiteralSo became deserved on us our Lord's word/saying , that we (are) tasting/experiencing.

Yusuf Ali"So now has been proved true, against us, the word of our Lord that we shall indeed (have to) taste (the punishment of our sins).
PickthalNow the Word of our Lord hath been fulfilled concerning us. Lo! we are about to taste (the doom).
Arberry So our Lord's Word is realised against us; we are tasting it.
ShakirSo the sentence of our Lord has come to pass against us: (now) we shall surely taste;
SarwarThus, the words of Our Lord about us have come true and now we are suffering the torment.
Khalifa"We justly incurred our Lord's judgment; now we have to suffer.
Hilali/Khan"So now the Word of our Lord has been justified against us, that we shall certainly (have to) taste (the torment).
H/K/SaheehSo the word of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment].
Maliktrue is the verdict which Our Lord has passed upon us, we shall indeed taste the punishment of our sins:[31]
QXPBut now the Word of our Lord has come to pass about all of us. Verily, we are bound to taste the fruit of our deeds.
Maulana AliSo the word of our Lord has proved true against us: we shall surely taste.
Free Minds"So our Lord's decree is now upon us, that we will suffer."
Qaribullah The statement of Our Lord is realized against us, and we are tasting it,

George SaleWherefore the sentence of our Lord hath been justly pronounced against us, and we shall surely taste his vengeance.
JM RodwellJust, therefore, is the doom which our Lord hath passed upon us. We shall surely taste it:

AsadBut now our Sustainer's word has come true against us [as well]: verily, we are bound to taste [the fruit of our sins].



as-Saffat 037:032

37:32 فاغويناكم انا كنا غاوين


TransliterationFaaghwaynakum inna kunna ghaweena
LiteralSo we misguided/lured you , that we were misguiding .

Yusuf Ali"We led you astray: for truly we were ourselves astray."
PickthalThus we misled you. Lo! we were (ourselves) astray.
Arberry Therefore we perverted you, and we ourselves were perverts.'
ShakirSo we led you astray, for we ourselves were erring.
SarwarWe mislead you and we ourselves had also gone astray."
Khalifa"We misled you, only because we were astray."
Hilali/Khan"So we led you astray because we were ourselves astray."
H/K/SaheehAnd we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators."
MalikWe misled you, for we ourselves were astray."[32]
QXPSo then, if we misled you, behold, we ourselves were astray."
Maulana AliWe led you astray, for we ourselves were erring.
Free Minds"We misled you, because we were astray."
Qaribullah we perverted you, indeed, we were perverts. '

George SaleWe seduced you; but we also erred ourselves.
JM RodwellWe made you err, for we had erred ourselves."

AsadSo then, [if it be true that] we have caused you to err grievously - behold, we ourselves had been lost in grievous error!" [For an explanation see 28:62-64 and the corresponding notes.]



as-Saffat 037:033

37:33 فانهم يومئذ في العذاب مشتركون


TransliterationFa-innahum yawma-ithin fee alAAathabi mushtarikoona
LiteralSo then they are (on) that day in the torture sharing.

Yusuf AliTruly, that Day, they will (all) share in the Penalty.
PickthalThen lo! this day they (both) are sharers in the doom.
Arberry So all of them on that day are sharers in the chastisement.
ShakirSo they shall on that day be sharers in the chastisement one with another.
SarwarOn that day they will all share the torment.
KhalifaThus, together they will all partake of the retribution on that day.
Hilali/KhanThen verily, that Day, they will (all) share in the torment.
H/K/SaheehSo indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment.
MalikSo on that Day they shall all be partners in the punishment.[33]
QXPAnd on that Day, verily, they will be partners in a common doom. (14:21), (33:67), (34:32), (40:47).
Maulana AliSo, that day they will be sharers in the chastisement.
Free MindsThen, on that Day they will all share in the retribution.
Qaribullah Therefore, on that Day they will all share Our punishment.

George SaleThey shall both thereof be made partakers of the same punishment on that day.
JM RodwellPartners therefore shall they be in punishment on that day.

AsadAnd, verily, on that Day they all will share in their common suffering.



as-Saffat 037:034

37:34 انا كذلك نفعل بالمجرمين


TransliterationInna kathalika nafAAalu bialmujrimeena
LiteralWe, like that, We make/do with the criminals/sinners.

Yusuf AliVerily that is how We shall deal with Sinners.
PickthalLo! thus deal We with the guilty.
Arberry Even so We do with the sinners;
ShakirSurely thus do We deal with the guilty.
SarwarThis is how We deal with the criminals.
KhalifaThis is how we requite the guilty.
Hilali/KhanCertainly, that is how We deal with AlMujrimoon (polytheists, sinners, criminals, the disobedient to Allah, etc.).
H/K/SaheehIndeed, that is how We deal with the criminals.
MalikThus, shall We deal with the criminals;[34]
QXPBehold, this is how We deal with the guilty.
Maulana AliThus do We deal with the guilty.
Free MindsThis is how We deal with the criminals.
Qaribullah As such We shall deal with the evildoers.

George SaleThus will We deal with the wicked:
JM RodwellTruly, thus will we deal with the wicked,

AsadVerily, thus shall We deal with all who were lost in sin:



as-Saffat 037:035

37:35 انهم كانوا اذا قيل لهم لااله الا الله يستكبرون


TransliterationInnahum kanoo itha qeela lahum la ilaha illa Allahu yastakbiroona
LiteralThat they truly were if (it) was said to them: "No God except god" they be arrogant.

Yusuf AliFor they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride,
PickthalFor when it was said unto them, There is no Allah save Allah, they were scornful
Arberry for when it was said to them, 'There is no god but God,' they were ever waxing proud,
ShakirSurely they used to behave proudly when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah;
SarwarThey were the ones, who on being told, "God is only One," become puffed-up with pride
KhalifaWhen they were told, "Laa Elaaha Ella Allah [There is no other god beside GOD]," they turned arrogant.

LiteralAnd they say: "Are we to leave our gods to a mad/insane poet?"

Yusuf AliAnd say: "What! shall we give up our gods for the sake of a Poet possessed?"
PickthalAnd said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet?
Arberry saying, 'What, shall we forsake our gods for a poet possessed?'
ShakirAnd to say: What! shall we indeed give up our gods for the sake of a mad poet?
Sarwarand said, "Should we give up our idols for the sake of an insane poet".
KhalifaThey said, "Shall we leave our gods for the sake of a crazy poet?"

Asadand would say, "Shall we, then, give up our deities at the bidding of a mad poet?" [Lit., "for [or "for the sake of"] a mad poet" - thus alluding to the allegation that the Quran is a product of Muhammad's mind (see note on 36:69). The reference to "deities" comprises, in this context, everything that man may "worship" in both the literal and the metaphorical senses of this word.]

37:37 بل جاء بالحق وصدق المرسلين


TransliterationBal jaa bialhaqqi wasaddaqa almursaleena
LiteralBut He came with the truth and he confirmed the messengers.

Yusuf AliNay! he has come with the (very) Truth, and he confirms (the Message of) the messengers (before him).
PickthalNay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent (before him).
Arberry 'No indeed; but he brought the truth, and confirmed the Envoys.
ShakirNay: he has come with the truth and verified the messengers.
SarwarIn fact, he had brought them the truth and had acknowledged the Messengers (who were sent before him).
