| Asad | CONSIDER these [messages] ranged in serried ranks, [Regarding the adjurative particle wa and my rendering it as "Consider", see first half of note on 74:32. Most of the classical commentators assume that verses 1-3 refer to angels - an assumption which Abu Muslim al-Isfahani (as quoted by Razi) rejects, stating that the passage refers to the true believers among human beings. However, Razi advances yet another (and, to my mind, most convincing) interpretation, suggesting that what is meant here are the messages (ayat) of the Quran, which - in the commentator's words - "deal with various subjects, some speaking of the evidence of God's oneness or of the evidence of His omniscience, omnipotence and wisdom, and some setting forth the evidence of [the truth of] prophetic revelation or of resurrection, while some deal with man's duties and the laws [relating thereto], and yet others are devoted to the teaching of high moral principles; and these messages are arranged in accordance with a coherent system above all [need of] change or alteration, so that they resemble beings or things standing `in serried ranks'." ] |

| Literal | That We decorated/beautified the sky/space (of) the present world with the stars'/planets' decoration/beauty . |

| Literal | They do not hear/listen (E) to the nobles/assembly the highest/mightiest/most dignified, and they be thrown/hurled from every/each side/direction. |

| Yusuf Ali | (So) they should not strain their ears in the direction of the Exalted Assembly but be cast away from every side, |
| Pickthal | They cannot listen to the Highest Chiefs for they are pelted from every side, |

| Qaribullah | so they cannot listen to the High Assembly, for they are pelted from every side. |

| Literal | Expelled/driven away , and for them (is) a permanent/continuous/lasting torture. |

| Arberry | rejected, and theirs is an everlasting chastisement, |

| Literal | Except who snatched the one snatch, so a light from a fire source/a star lit/ignited/penetrating followed him. |

| Yusuf Ali | Except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming fire, of piercing brightness. |
| Pickthal | Save him who snatcheth a fragment, and there pursueth him a piercing flame. |

| QXP | Even if a thing of their conjecture comes to pass, they are pursued by a Flame of Brightness. (The Divine Revelation exposes the claimants to the 'occult sciences' (18:22), (26:210-212), (52:38), (67:5), (72: 8-9)). |
| Maulana Ali | Except him who snatches away but once, then there follows him a brightly shining flame. |
| Free Minds | Any of them who snatches something away, he is pursued by a piercing flame. |
| Qaribullah | except such as snatches a fragment, and he is pursued by a piercing flame. |

| 37:11 فاستفتهم اهم اشد خلقا ام من خلقنا انا خلقناهم من طين لازب |

| Transliteration | Faistaftihim ahum ashaddu khalqan am man khalaqna inna khalaqnahum min teenin lazibin |
| Literal | So ask/take their opinion , are they a stronger creation, or who We created? That We created them from very sticky mud/clay . |

| Yusuf Ali | Just ask their opinion: are they the more difficult to create, or the (other) beings We have created? Them have We created out of a sticky clay! |
| Pickthal | Then ask them (O Muhammad): Are they stronger as a creation, or those (others) whom we have created? Lo! We created them of plastic clay. |
| Arberry | So ask them for a pronouncement -- Are they stronger in constitution, or those We created? We created them of clinging clay. |

| Hilali/Khan | Then ask them (i.e. these polytheists, O Muhammad SAW): "Are they stronger as creation, or those (others like the heavens and the earth and the mountains, etc.) whom We have created?" Verily, We created them of a sticky clay. |
| H/K/Saheeh | Then inquire of them, [O Muúammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created men from sticky clay. |
| Malik | Ask them: "What is more difficult - their creation or the rest of Our creation? - Them We have created out of a sticky clay.[11] |
| QXP | And ask them to enlighten you, "What is more difficult and stronger - their creation or the rest of Our creation in the multiform Universe? Them (the humans) We have only created out of a sticky clay. |
| Maulana Ali | So ask them whether they are stronger in creation or those (others) whom We have created. Surely We created them of firm clay. |
| Free Minds | So ask them: "Are they the more powerful creation, or the others We created?" We have created them from sticky mud. |
| Qaribullah | So ask them, are they stronger in constitution, or those whom We have created. We have created them of sticky clay. |

| 37:12 بل عجبت ويسخرون |

| Literal | But you wondered/were astonished/were surprised, and they humiliate/mock/undermine/ridicule . |

| Yusuf Ali | Truly dost thou marvel, while they ridicule, |
| Pickthal | Nay, but thou dost marvel when they mock |
| Arberry | Nay, thou marvellest; and they scoff |
| Shakir | Nay! you wonder while they mock, |
| Sarwar | (Muhammad), you will be surprised that they still mock (God's revelations). |
| Khalifa | While you are awed, they mock. |
| Hilali/Khan | Nay, you (O Muhammad SAW) wondered (at their insolence) while they mock (at you and at the Quran). |

| Malik | You marvel at the wonders of Allah’s creation, while they ridicule at it.[12] |
| QXP | Nay, but whereas you (O Prophet) marvel at the Universe, they mock - and again you marvel at their mocking! |
| Maulana Ali | Nay, thou wonderest, while they mock, |
| Free Minds | While you were awed, they simply mocked. |
| Qaribullah | No, you marvel, while they scoff. |

| George Sale | Thou wondrest at God's power and their obstinacy; but they mock at the arguments urged to convince them: |

| 37:13 واذا ذكروا لايذكرون |

| Literal | And if they were reminded, they do not mention/remember . |

| Literal | And they said: "That truly this (is) except clear/evident magic/sorcery. |

| Yusuf Ali | And say, "This is nothing but evident sorcery! |

| Arberry | and they say, 'This is nothing but manifest sorcery. |
| Shakir | And they say: This is nothing but clear magic: |

| Literal | Gather those who were unjust/oppressive and their spouses , and what they were worshipping. |

| Literal | From other than God, so guide them to the Hell's road/way. |

| Yusuf Ali | "Besides Allah, and lead them to the Way to the (Fierce) Fire! |

| 37:28 قالوا انكم كنتم تاتوننا عن اليمين |

| Transliteration | Qaloo innakum kuntum ta/toonana AAani alyameeni |
| Literal | They said: "That you were coming to us from the right (side)." |

| Yusuf Ali | They will say: "It was ye who used to come to us from the right hand (of power and authority)!" |
| Pickthal | They say: Lo! ye used to come unto us, imposing, (swearing that ye spoke the truth). |
| Arberry | These say, 'Why, you of old would come to us from the right hand.' |
| Shakir | They shall say: Surely you used to come to us from the right side. |

| 37:29 قالوا بل لم تكونوا مؤمنين |

| Literal | And (there) was not from power/control for us over you, but you were a tyrannizing/arrogant nation. |

| Yusuf Ali | "Nor had we any authority over you. Nay, it was ye who were a people in obstinate rebellion! |
| Pickthal | We had no power over you, but ye were wayward folk. |
| Arberry | we had no authority over you; no, you were an insolent people. |

| Yusuf Ali | "So now has been proved true, against us, the word of our Lord that we shall indeed (have to) taste (the punishment of our sins). |
| Pickthal | Now the Word of our Lord hath been fulfilled concerning us. Lo! we are about to taste (the doom). |

| Transliteration | Faaghwaynakum inna kunna ghaweena |
| Literal | So we misguided/lured you , that we were misguiding . |

| Pickthal | Thus we misled you. Lo! we were (ourselves) astray. |
| Arberry | Therefore we perverted you, and we ourselves were perverts.' |

| Sarwar | We mislead you and we ourselves had also gone astray." |
| Khalifa | "We misled you, only because we were astray." |
| Hilali/Khan | "So we led you astray because we were ourselves astray." |
| H/K/Saheeh | And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators." |
| Malik | We misled you, for we ourselves were astray."[32] |
| QXP | So then, if we misled you, behold, we ourselves were astray." |
| Maulana Ali | We led you astray, for we ourselves were erring. |
| Free Minds | "We misled you, because we were astray." |
| Qaribullah | we perverted you, indeed, we were perverts. ' |

| 37:33 فانهم يومئذ في العذاب مشتركون |

| Transliteration | Fa-innahum yawma-ithin fee alAAathabi mushtarikoona |
| Literal | So then they are (on) that day in the torture sharing. |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | Truly, that Day, they will (all) share in the Penalty. |
| Pickthal | Then lo! this day they (both) are sharers in the doom. |
| Arberry | So all of them on that day are sharers in the chastisement. |
| Shakir | So they shall on that day be sharers in the chastisement one with another. |
| Sarwar | On that day they will all share the torment. |
| Khalifa | Thus, together they will all partake of the retribution on that day. |
| Hilali/Khan | Then verily, that Day, they will (all) share in the torment. |
| H/K/Saheeh | So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment. |
| Malik | So on that Day they shall all be partners in the punishment.[33] |
| QXP | And on that Day, verily, they will be partners in a common doom. (14:21), (33:67), (34:32), (40:47). |
| Maulana Ali | So, that day they will be sharers in the chastisement. |
| Free Minds | Then, on that Day they will all share in the retribution. |
| Qaribullah | Therefore, on that Day they will all share Our punishment. |

| Literal | We, like that, We make/do with the criminals/sinners. |

| Yusuf Ali | Verily that is how We shall deal with Sinners. |

| Arberry | Even so We do with the sinners; |
| Shakir | Surely thus do We deal with the guilty. |
| Sarwar | This is how We deal with the criminals. |
| Khalifa | This is how we requite the guilty. |
| Hilali/Khan | Certainly, that is how We deal with AlMujrimoon (polytheists, sinners, criminals, the disobedient to Allah, etc.). |
| H/K/Saheeh | Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals. |
| Malik | Thus, shall We deal with the criminals;[34] |
| QXP | Behold, this is how We deal with the guilty. |
| Maulana Ali | Thus do We deal with the guilty. |

| Qaribullah | As such We shall deal with the evildoers. |

| 37:35 انهم كانوا اذا قيل لهم لااله الا الله يستكبرون |

| Transliteration | Innahum kanoo itha qeela lahum la ilaha illa Allahu yastakbiroona |
| Literal | That they truly were if (it) was said to them: "No God except god" they be arrogant. |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride, |
| Pickthal | For when it was said unto them, There is no Allah save Allah, they were scornful |
| Arberry | for when it was said to them, 'There is no god but God,' they were ever waxing proud, |
| Shakir | Surely they used to behave proudly when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah; |
| Sarwar | They were the ones, who on being told, "God is only One," become puffed-up with pride |
| Khalifa | When they were told, "Laa Elaaha Ella Allah [There is no other god beside GOD]," they turned arrogant. |
| Hilali/Khan | Truly, when it was said to them: La ilaha ill-Allah "(none has the right to be worshipped but Allah)," they puffed themselves up with pride (i.e. denied it). |
| H/K/Saheeh | Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allah," were arrogant |
| Malik | for when they were told: "There is no god except Allah," they used to puff themselves up with pride[35] |
| QXP | For when it was said to them, "There is no god but Allah", they showed arrogance. |
| Maulana Ali | They indeed were arrogant, when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah; |
| Free Minds | When it was said to them: "There is no god except God," they would be arrogant. |
| Qaribullah | For when it was said to them: 'There is no god except Allah, ' they were always proud |

| George Sale | Because when it is said unto them, there is no god besides the true God, they swell with arrogance, |

| 37:36 ويقولون ائنا لتاركوا الهتنا لشاعر مجنون |

| Transliteration | Wayaqooloona a-inna latarikoo alihatina lishaAAirin majnoonin |
| Literal | And they say: "Are we to leave our gods to a mad/insane poet?" |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | And say: "What! shall we give up our gods for the sake of a Poet possessed?" |
| Pickthal | And said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet? |
| Arberry | saying, 'What, shall we forsake our gods for a poet possessed?' |
| Shakir | And to say: What! shall we indeed give up our gods for the sake of a mad poet? |
| Sarwar | and said, "Should we give up our idols for the sake of an insane poet". |
| Khalifa | They said, "Shall we leave our gods for the sake of a crazy poet?" |
| Hilali/Khan | And (they) said: "Are we going to abandon our aliha (gods) for the sake of a mad poet? |
| H/K/Saheeh | And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?" |
| Malik | and say: "What! Should we give up our gods for the sake of a mad poet?"[36] |
| QXP | And used to say, "Shall we give up our gods for a mad poet?" |
| Maulana Ali | And said: Shall we give up our gods for a mad poet? |
| Free Minds | And they would Say: "Shall we leave our gods because of a crazy poet?" |
| Qaribullah | and said: 'Are we to renounce our gods for the sake of a mad poet? ' |

| George Sale | and say, shall we abandon our gods for a distracted poet? |
| JM Rodwell | And said, "Shall we then abandon our gods for a crazed poet?" |
| |

| Asad | and would say, "Shall we, then, give up our deities at the bidding of a mad poet?" [Lit., "for [or "for the sake of"] a mad poet" - thus alluding to the allegation that the Quran is a product of Muhammad's mind (see note on 36:69). The reference to "deities" comprises, in this context, everything that man may "worship" in both the literal and the metaphorical senses of this word.] |
| 37:37 بل جاء بالحق وصدق المرسلين |

| Transliteration | Bal jaa bialhaqqi wasaddaqa almursaleena |
| Literal | But He came with the truth and he confirmed the messengers. |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | Nay! he has come with the (very) Truth, and he confirms (the Message of) the messengers (before him). |
| Pickthal | Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent (before him). |
| Arberry | 'No indeed; but he brought the truth, and confirmed the Envoys. |
| Shakir | Nay: he has come with the truth and verified the messengers. |
| Sarwar | In fact, he had brought them the truth and had acknowledged the Messengers (who were sent before him). |
