| 29:2 احسب الناس ان يتركوا ان يقولوا امنا وهم لايفتنون |

| Transliteration | Ahasiba alnnasu an yutrakoo an yaqooloo amanna wahum la yuftanoona |
| Literal | Did the people think/suppose that they be left that they say: "We believed." And they are not being tested . |

| Yusuf Ali | Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe", and that they will not be tested? |

| Transliteration | Walaqad fatanna allatheena min qablihim falayaAAlamanna Allahu allatheena sadaqoo walayaAAlamanna alkathibeena |
| Literal | And We had tested those who (were) from before them, so God knows (E) those who were truthful, and He knows (E) the liars/deniers/falsifiers. |

| Yusuf Ali | We did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false. |
| Pickthal | Lo! We tested those who were before you. Thus Allah knoweth those who are sincere, and knoweth those who feign. |

| Literal | Or those who make/do the sins/crimes thought/supposed that they precede/surpass Us , it became bad/evil/harmful what they judge/rule. |

| Yusuf Ali | Do those who practise evil think that they will get the better of Us? Evil is their judgment! |
| Pickthal | Or do those who do ill-deeds imagine that they can outstrip Us? Evil (for them) is that which they decide. |

| Transliteration | Man kana yarjoo liqaa Allahi fa-inna ajala Allahi laatin wahuwa alssameeAAu alAAaleemu |
| Literal | Who was/is hoping/expecting God's meeting, so that God's term/time is coming (E), and He is the hearing/listening, the knowledgeable. |

| Yusuf Ali | For those whose hopes are in the meeting with Allah (in the Hereafter, let them strive); for the term (appointed) by Allah is surely coming and He hears and knows (all things). |

| Transliteration | Waman jahada fa-innama yujahidu linafsihi inna Allaha laghaniyyun AAani alAAalameena |
| Literal | And who struggled/exerted , so but he struggles/exerts for his self, that God (is) rich (E) from (not in need to) the creations all together/(universes) |

| Yusuf Ali | And if any strive (with might and main), they do so for their own souls: for Allah is free of all needs from all creation. |
| Pickthal | And whosoever striveth, striveth only for himself, for lo! Allah is altogether Independent of (His) creatures. |
| Arberry | Whosoever struggles, struggles only to his own gain; surely God is All-sufficient nor needs any being. |
| Shakir | And whoever strives hard, he strives only for his own soul; most surely Allah is Self-sufficient, above (need of) the worlds. |

| Malik | He that strives, does that for his own soul; for Allah is certainly transcendent and beyond any need of the worlds.[6] |
| QXP | Hence, whoever strives (in the Cause of Allah), strives for the good of his own "Self". Allah is altogether Independent of His creation. |
| Maulana Ali | And whoever strives hard, strives for himself. Surely Allah is Self-sufficient, above (need of) (His) creatures. |
| Free Minds | And whosoever strives then he is only striving for himself; for God is in no need of the worlds. |

| 29:7 والذين امنوا وعملوا الصالحات لنكفرن عنهم سيئاتهم ولنجزينهم احسن الذي كانوا يعملون |

| Transliteration | Waallatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati lanukaffiranna AAanhum sayyi-atihim walanajziyannahum ahsana allathee kanoo yaAAmaloona |
| Literal | And those who believed and made/did the correct/righteous deeds We will cover/substitute from their sins/crimes (E), and We will reimburse them (E) best (of) what they were making/doing . |

| Yusuf Ali | Those who believe and work righteous deeds,- from them shall We blot out all evil (that may be) in them, and We shall reward them according to the best of their deeds. |
| Pickthal | And as for those who believe and do good works, We shall remit from them their evil deeds and shall repay them the best that they did. |
| Arberry | And those who believe, and do righteous deeds, We shall surely acquit them of their evil deeds, and shall recompense them the best of what they were doing. |

| H/K/Saheeh | And those who believe and do righteous deeds We will surely remove from them their misdeeds and will surely reward them according to the best of what they used to do. |
| Malik | As for those who believe and do good deeds, We shall cleanse them of their sins and We shall reward them according to the best of their deeds.[7] |
| QXP | As for those who come to believe and help others, We shall blot out their previous misdeeds, and We shall certainly reward them generously for what they do. |

| 29:8 ووصينا الانسان بوالديه حسنا وان جاهداك لتشرك بي ماليس لك به علم فلا تطعهما الي مرجعكم فانبئكم بما كنتم تعملون |

| Transliteration | Wawassayna al-insana biwalidayhi husnan wa-in jahadaka litushrika bee ma laysa laka bihi AAilmun fala tutiAAhuma ilayya marjiAAukum faonabbi-okum bima kuntum taAAmaloona |
| Literal | And We directed/recommended the human (with) a goodness/beauty with (to) his parents, and if they (B) did their utmost against you to share/make partners with Me, for what is not for you knowledge with it, so do not obey them (B), to Me (is) your return, so I inform you with what you were making/doing. |

| Yusuf Ali | We have enjoined on man kindness to parents: but if they (either of them) strive (to force) thee to join with Me (in worship) anything of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not. Ye have (all) to return to me, and I will tell you (the truth) of all that ye did. |
| Pickthal | We have enjoined on man kindness to parents; but if they strive to make thee join with Me that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not. Unto Me is your return and I shall tell you what ye used to do. |

| Sarwar | We have advised the human being, "Be kind to your parents. Do not obey them if they force you to consider equal to Me things which you do not know are such." You will all return (to Me) and I shall show all that you have done. |
| Khalifa | We enjoined the human being to honor his parents. But if they try to force you to set up idols beside Me, do not obey them. To Me is your ultimate return, then I will inform you of everything you had done. |
| Hilali/Khan | And We have enjoined on man to be good and dutiful to his parents, but if they strive to make you join with Me (in worship) anything (as a partner) of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not. Unto Me is your return, and I shall tell you what you used to do. |
| H/K/Saheeh | And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do. |
| Malik | We have enjoined man to show kindness to his parents; but if they (your parents) force you to commit shirk with Me, of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return and I will inform you of what you have done.[8] |

But, if they strive to make you ascribe divinity side by side with Me, this will conflict with your knowledge. Then, obey them not, for it is unto Me that all of you must return, whereupon I shall truly make you understand what you used to do. (31:14-15). |

| 29:9 والذين امنوا وعملوا الصالحات لندخلنهم في الصالحين |

| Transliteration | Waallatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati lanudkhilannahum fee alssaliheena |
| Literal | And those who believed, and made/did the correct/righteous deeds, We will enter them (E) in (with) the correct/righteous. |
| |
|
| Yusuf Ali | And those who believe and work righteous deeds,- them shall We admit to the company of the Righteous. |
| Pickthal | And as for those who believe and do good works, We verily shall make them enter in among the righteous. |
| Arberry | And those who believe, and do righteous deeds assuredly We shall admit them among the righteous. |
| Shakir | And (as for) those who believe and do good, We will most surely cause them to enter among the good. |
| Sarwar | We shall admit the righteously striving believers into the company of the pious ones. |

| Hilali/Khan | And for those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah and other items of Faith) and do righteous good deeds, surely, We shall make them enter in (the enterance of) the righteous (i.e. in Paradise). |

| Malik | Those who have accepted the true faith and do good deeds shall be admitted among the righteous.[9] |
| QXP | Those who accept the Divine Revelation and help create balance in the community, We will include them among those who have fulfilled their personalities. |
| Maulana Ali | And those who believe and do good, We shall surely make them enter among the righteous. |
| Free Minds | And those who believed and did good works, We will admit them with the righteous. |
| Qaribullah | Those who believe and do good works shall be admitted among the righteous. |

| George Sale | Those who shall believe, and shall work righteousness, We will surely introduce into paradise, among the upright. |

| 29:10 ومن الناس من يقول امنا بالله فاذا اوذي في الله جعل فتنة الناس كعذاب الله ولئن جاء نصر من ربك ليقولن انا كنا معكم اوليس الله باعلم بما في صدور العالمين |

| Transliteration | Wamina alnnasi man yaqoolu amanna biAllahi fa-itha oothiya fee Allahi jaAAala fitnata alnnasi kaAAathabi Allahi wala-in jaa nasrun min rabbika layaqoolunna inna kunna maAAakum awa laysa Allahu bi-aAAlama bima fee sudoori alAAalameena |
| Literal | And from the people who says: "We believed by God." So if he was harmed mildly in God, he made/put the people's test/torture as/like God's torture, and if victory/aid came from your Lord, they will say (E): "That we were with you." Or is not God with more knowledgeable with what (is in) the creation's all together's/(universes) chests (innermosts). |

| Yusuf Ali | Then there are among men such as say, "We believe in Allah"; but when they suffer affliction in (the cause of) Allah, they treat men's oppression as if it were the Wrath of Allah! And if help comes (to thee) from thy Lord, they are sure to say, "We have (always) been with you!" Does not Allah know best all that is in the hearts of all creation? |
| Pickthal | Of mankind is he who saith: We believe in Allah, but, if he be made to suffer for the sake of Allah, he mistaketh the persecution of mankind for Allah's punishment; and then, if victory cometh from thy Lord, will say: Lo! we were with you (all the while). Is not Allah Best Aware of what is in the bosoms of (His) creatures? |
| Arberry | Some men there are who say, 'We believe in God,' but when such a man is hurt in God's cause, he makes the persecution of men as it were God's chastisement; then if help comes from thy Lord, he will say 'We were with you.' What, does not God know very well what is in the breasts of all beings? |
| Shakir | And among men is he who says: We believe in Allah; but when he is persecuted in (the way of) Allah he thinks the persecution of men to be as the chastisement of Allah; and if there come assistance from your Lord, they would most certainly say: Surely we were with you. What! is not Allah the best knower of what is in the breasts of mankind. |
| Sarwar | Some people say, "We have faith in God." But when they face some hardship for His cause, they begin to consider the persecution that they have experienced from people as a torment from God. When your Lord grants you a victory, they say, "We were with you." Does God not know best what is in the hearts of every creature?. |
| Khalifa | Among the people there are those who say, "We believe in GOD," but as soon as they suffer any hardship because of GOD, they equate the people's persecution with GOD's retribution. But if blessings from your Lord come your way, they say, "We were with you." Is GOD not fully aware of the people's innermost thoughts? |
| Hilali/Khan | Of mankind are some who say: "We believe in Allah," but if they are made to suffer for the sake of Allah, they consider the trial of mankind as Allahs punishment, and if victory comes from your Lord, (the hypocrites) will say: "Verily! We were with you (helping you)." Is not Allah Best Aware of what is in the breast of the Alameen (mankind and jinns). |
| H/K/Saheeh | And of the people are some who say, We believe in Allah, but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allah, they consider the trial of the people as [if it were] the punishment of Allah. But if victory comes from your Lord, they say, Indeed, We were with you. Is not Allah most knowing of what is within the breasts of all creatures? |
| Malik | There are some among people, who say: "We believe in Allah;" yet when they suffer in the cause of Allah they confuse the persecution of people with the punishment of Allah. But when there comes help in the shape of a victory from your Lord, they are sure to say: "We have always been with you." Is not Allah fully aware of what is in the hearts of the people of the world.[10] |
| QXP | Now of mankind there are such who say, "We do believe in Allah." But when they are made to suffer in Allah's Cause, they think that persecution at the hands of people is Allah's punishment. And if help comes from your Lord, they say, "Behold, we were with you all the while." Is not Allah best Aware of what is in the hearts of all creatures? |
| Maulana Ali | And among men is he who says: We believe in Allah; but when he is persecuted for the sake of Allah, he thinks the persecution of men to be as the chastisement of Allah. And if there comes help from thy Lord, they will say: Surely we were with you. Is not Allah the Best Knower of what is in the hearts of mankind? |

Tropically, the term munafiq describes a person who is "two-faced", inasmuch as he always tries to find an easy way out of any real commitment, be it spiritual or social, by adapting his course of action to what promises to be of practical advantage to him in the situation in which he happens to find himself. Since a person thus characterized usually pretends to be morally better than he really is, the epithet munafiq may roughly be rendered as "hypocrite". It should, however, be noted that whereas this Western term invariably implies conscious dissembling with the intent to deceive others, the Arabic term munafiq may also be applied - and occasionally is applied in the Quran - to a person who, being weak or uncertain in his beliefs or moral convictions, merely deceives himself. | Asad | You worship only [lifeless] idols instead of God, and [thus] you give visible shape to a lie! [Lit., you create a lie".] Behold, those [things and beings] that you worship instead of God have it not in their power to provide sustenance for you: seek, then, all [your] sustenance from God, and worship Him [alone] and be grateful to Him: [for] unto Him you shall be brought back! |
| 29:18 وان تكذبوا فقد كذب امم من قبلكم وماعلى الرسول الا البلاغ المبين |

| Transliteration | Wa-in tukaththiboo faqad kaththaba omamun min qablikum wama AAala alrrasooli illa albalaghu almubeenu |
| Literal | And if you lie/deny/falsify, so nations from before you had lied/denied/falsified, and nothing (is) on the messenger except the information/communication, the clear/evident . |

| Literal | And those who disbelieved with God's verses/evidences/signs, and meeting Him, those, they despaired/became hopeless from My mercy, and those for them (is) a painful torture. |

| Yusuf Ali | Those who reject the Signs of Allah and the Meeting with Him (in the Hereafter),- it is they who shall despair of My Mercy: it is they who will (suffer) a most grievous Penalty. |

| 29:24 فما كان جواب قومه الا ان قالوا اقتلوه او حرقوه فانجاه الله من النار ان في ذلك لايات لقوم يؤمنون |

| Transliteration | Fama kana jawaba qawmihi illa an qaloo oqtuloohu aw harriqoohu faanjahu Allahu mina alnnari inna fee thalika laayatin liqawmin yu/minoona |
| Literal | So his nation's answer/reply was not except that they said: "Kill him, or burn him." so God saved/rescued him from the fire, that in that (are) evidences/signs/verses (E), to a nation believing. |

| Yusuf Ali | So naught was the answer of (Abraham's) people except that they said: "Slay him or burn him." But Allah did save him from the Fire. Verily in this are Signs for people who believe. |
