26:2 تلك ايات الكتاب المبين

ash-Shu`ara' 026:003

26:3 لعلك باخع نفسك الا يكونوا مؤمنين


TransliterationLaAAallaka bakhiAAun nafsaka alla yakoonoo mu/mineena
LiteralMaybe/perhaps you (are) exhausting/destroying yourself from anger that they not be believing.

Yusuf AliIt may be thou frettest thy soul with grief, that they do not become Believers.
PickthalIt may be that thou tormentest thyself (O Muhammad) because they believe not.
Arberry Perchance thou consumest thyself that they are not believers.
ShakirPerhaps you will kill yourself with grief because they do not believe.
SarwarYou will perhaps kill yourself with anguish because they are not accepting the faith.
KhalifaYou may blame yourself that they are not believers.
Hilali/KhanIt may be that you (O Muhammad SAW) are going to kill yourself with grief, that they do not become believers (in your Risalah (Messengership) and in your Message of Islamic Monotheism).
H/K/SaheehPerhaps, [O Muúammad], you would kill yourself with grief that they will not be believers.
MalikO Muhammad, you will perhaps fret yourself to death with grief because they do not believe.[3]
QXP(O Prophet) Will you, (in your compassion), torment yourself to death because they refuse to believe in it?
Maulana AliPerhaps thou wilt kill thyself with grief because they believe not.

George SalePeradventure thou afflictest thy self unto death, lest the Meccans become not true believers.

ash-Shu`ara' 026:004

26:4 ان نشا ننزل عليهم من السماء اية فظلت اعناقهم لها خاضعين


TransliterationIn nasha/ nunazzil AAalayhim mina alssama-i ayatan fathallat aAAnaquhum laha khadiAAeena
LiteralIf We want We descend on them from the sky an evidence/sign , so their necks continued/became to it bending/leaning .

Yusuf AliIf (such) were Our Will, We could send down to them from the sky a Sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.
PickthalIf We will, We can send down on them from the sky a portent so that their necks would remain bowed before it.
Arberry If We will, We shall send down on them out of heaven a sign, so their necks will stay humbled to it.
ShakirIf We please, We should send down upon them a sign from the heaven so that their necks should stoop to it.
SarwarHad We wanted, We would have sent them a miracle from the sky to make their heads hang down in submission.
KhalifaIf we will, we can send from the sky a sign that forces their necks to bow.
Hilali/KhanIf We will, We could send down to them from the heaven a sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.

QXPHad We so Willed, We could have sent down to them a Sign from the sky, to which they would have bent their necks in humility. (But, that is not Our Design. We expect them to use their reason (12:108)).
Maulana AliIf We please, We could send down on them a sign from heaven, so that their necks would bend before it.
Free MindsIf We wish, We could send down for them from the heavens a sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.
Qaribullah If We will, We can send down on them a sign from heaven before which their necks will remain humbled.

George SaleIf We pleased, We could send down unto them a convincing sign from heaven, unto which their necks would humbly submit.
JM RodwellWere it our will we could send down to them a sign from Heaven, before which they would humbly bow.

AsadHad We so willed, We could have sent down unto them a message from the skies, so that their necks would [be forced to] bow down before it in humility. [Inasmuch as the spiritual value of man's faith depends on its being an outcome of free choice and not of compulsion, the visible or audible appearance of a "message from the skies" would, by its very obviousness, nullify the element of free choice and, therefore, deprive man's faith in that message of all its moral significance.]



ash-Shu`ara' 026:005

26:5 وماياتيهم من ذكر من الرحمن محدث الا كانوا عنه معرضين


TransliterationWama ya/teehim min thikrin mina alrrahmani muhdathin illa kanoo AAanhu muAArideena
LiteralAnd none from a reminder initiated/originated from the merciful comes to them except they were from it objecting/opposing .

Yusuf AliBut there comes not to them a newly-revealed Message from (Allah) Most Gracious, but they turn away therefrom.
PickthalNever cometh there unto them a fresh reminder from the Beneficent One, but they turn away from it.
Arberry But never fresh remembrance comes to them from the All-merciful, except they turn away from it.
ShakirAnd there does not come to them a new reminder from the Beneficent Allah but they turn aside from it.
SarwarWhenever a new message comes to them from the Beneficent God, they turn away from it.
KhalifaWhenever a reminder from the Most Gracious comes to them, that is new, they turn away in aversion.
Hilali/KhanAnd never comes there unto them a Reminder as a recent revelation from the Most Beneficent (Allah), but they turn away therefrom.
H/K/SaheehAnd no revelation comes to them anew from the Most Merciful except that they turn away from it.
MalikThey have been turning their backs on each fresh warning that comes to them from the Compassionate (Allah).[5]
QXPAnd so whenever a Reminder comes to them from the Beneficent, they turn away from it.
Maulana AliAnd there comes not to them a new Reminder from the Beneficent but they turn away from it.
Free MindsAnd not a reminder comes to them from the Almighty, except that they turn away from it.
Qaribullah A fresh remembrance has never come to them from the Merciful, except they turn away from it.

George SaleBut where cometh unto them no admonition from the Merciful, being newly revealed as occasions require, but they turn aside from the same;
JM RodwellBut from each fresh warning that cometh to them from the God of Mercy they have only turned aside,

Asad[But We have not willed it:] and so, whenever there comes unto them any fresh reminder from the Most Gracious, they [who are blind of heart] always - turn their backs upon it:



ash-Shu`ara' 026:006

26:6 فقد كذبوا فسياتيهم انباء ماكانوا به يستهزؤون


TransliterationFaqad kaththaboo fasaya/teehim anbao ma kanoo bihi yastahzi-oona
LiteralSo they had lied/denied/falsified so (the) news/information (of) what they were with it mocking/making fun of, will come to them.

Yusuf AliThey have indeed rejected (the Message): so they will know soon (enough) the truth of what they mocked at!
PickthalNow they have denied (the Truth); but there will come unto them tidings of that whereat they used to scoff.
Arberry So they have cried lies; therefore assuredly tidings will come to them of that they mocked at.
ShakirSo they have indeed rejected (the truth), therefore the news of that which they mock shall soon come to them.
SarwarThey have called (our revelation) lies. They will soon learn the consequences of what they mocked.
KhalifaSince they disbelieved, they have incurred the consequences of their heedlessness.
Hilali/KhanSo they have indeed denied (the truth this Quran), then the news of what they mocked at, will come to them.
H/K/SaheehFor they have already denied, but there will come to them the news of that which they used to ridicule.
MalikBut now that they have neglected the warning, they will soon come to know the reality of what they have been mocking at.[6]
QXPThus indeed have they rejected this Message. But in time they will come to understand what it was that they ridiculed.
Maulana AliThey indeed reject, so the news will soon come to them of that at which they mock.
Free MindsThey have denied, thus the news will come to them of what they used to ridicule.
Qaribullah So, they belied, but surely the tidings of that they mocked will come to them.

George Saleand they have charged it with falsehood: But a message shall come unto them, which they shall not laugh to scorn.
JM RodwellAnd treated it as a lie: But tidings shall reach them which they shall not laugh to scorn.

Asadthus, indeed, have they given the lie (to this message as well). But [in time] they will come to understand what it was that they were wont to deride! [See 6:4 -5 and the corresponding note.]



ash-Shu`ara' 026:007

26:7 اولم يروا الى الارض كم انبتنا فيها من كل زوج كريم


TransliterationAwa lam yaraw ila al-ardi kam anbatna feeha min kulli zawjin kareemin
LiteralDo they not see to the earth/Planet Earth how many/much We sprouted/grew in it from every/each generous pair .

Yusuf AliDo they not look at the earth,- how many noble things of all kinds We have produced therein?
PickthalHave they not seen the earth, how much of every fruitful kind We make to grow therein?
Arberry What, have they not regarded the earth, how many therein We have caused to grow of every generous kind?
ShakirDo they not see the earth, how many of every noble kind We have caused to grow in it?
SarwarHave they not seen the earth in which We have made gracious plants grow?.
KhalifaHave they not seen the earth, and how many kinds of beautiful plants we have grown thereon?
Hilali/KhanDo they not observe the earth, how much of every good kind We cause to grow therein?
H/K/SaheehDid they not look at the earth how much We have produced therein from every noble kind?
MalikHave they not looked at the earth to see how We have caused all kinds of noble pairs to grow in it?[7]
QXPDo they not see the earth how much of every fruitful kind We cause to grow therein?
Maulana AliSee they not the earth, how many of every noble kind We cause to grow in it?
Free MindsDid they not look to the Earth, how many plants have We raised in it, from each a good pair.
Qaribullah Have they not seen the earth, how many We caused to grow in it every generous kind?

George SaleDo they not behold the earth, how many vegetables We cause to spring up therein, of every noble species?

AsadHave they, then, never considered the earth - how much of every noble kind [of life] We have caused to grow thereon?



ash-Shu`ara' 026:008

26:8 ان في ذلك لاية وماكان اكثرهم مؤمنين


TransliterationInna fee thalika laayatan wama kana aktharuhum mu/mineena
LiteralThat in that (is) an evidence/sign (E) , and most of them were not believing.

Yusuf AliVerily, in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
PickthalLo! herein is indeed a portent; yet most of them are not believers.
Arberry Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers.
ShakirMost surely there is a sign in that, but most of them will not believe.
SarwarIn this there is, certainly, evidence (of the Truth). But most of them have no faith.
KhalifaThis should be a sufficient proof for them, but most of them are not believers.
Hilali/KhanVerily, in this is an Ayah (proof or sign), yet most of them (polytheists, pagans, etc., who do not believe in Resurrection) are not believers.
H/K/SaheehIndeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
MalikSurely in this there is a sign; yet most of them do not believe.[8]
QXPThis is indeed a Sign, yet most of them are not believers (in the Almightiness of their Lord).
Maulana AliSurely in this is a sign; yet most of them believe not.

ash-Shu`ara' 026:009

26:9 وان ربك لهو العزيز الرحيم


TransliterationWa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu alrraheemu
LiteralAnd that your Lord He is (E) the glorious/mighty , the merciful.

Yusuf AliAnd verily, thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
PickthalAnd lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.
Arberry Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate.
ShakirAnd most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.
SarwarYour Lord is the Majestic and the All-merciful.
KhalifaMost assuredly, your Lord is the Almighty, Most Merciful.
Hilali/KhanAnd verily, your Lord! He is truly the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.
H/K/SaheehAnd indeed, your Lord He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
MalikIn fact your Lord is the Mighty as well as the Merciful.[9]
QXPBut, verily, your Lord is Almighty, Merciful. (Whether they believe or not He provides them with means of sustenance).
Maulana AliAnd surely thy Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.
Free MindsAnd your Lord is the Noble, the Merciful.
Qaribullah Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful.

George SaleVerily thy Lord is the mighty, the merciful God.
JM RodwellAnd assuredly, thy Lord!-He is the Mighty, the Merciful.

AsadBut, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! [The above two verses appear eight times, in this surah. Apart from the present instance, they conclude, like a refrain, each of the subsequent seven stories of earlier prophets, which by means of their, in places, almost identical phrasing - are meant to stress the essential identity of the ethical teachings of all the prophets, as well as to illustrate the statement, in verse 5, that a rejection of God's messages is a recurrent phenomenon in the history of mankind despite the fact that His existence is clearly manifested in all living creation.]



ash-Shu`ara' 026:010

26:10 واذ نادى ربك موسى ان ائت القوم الظالمين


TransliterationWa-ith nada rabbuka moosa ani i/ti alqawma alththalimeena
LiteralAnd when Moses called/cried (to) your Lord that: "Come/bring the nation the unjust/oppressive."

Yusuf AliBehold, thy Lord called Moses: "Go to the people of iniquity,-
PickthalAnd when thy Lord called Moses, saying: Go unto the wrongdoing folk,
Arberry And when thy Lord called to Moses, 'Go to the people of the evildoers,
ShakirAnd when your Lord called out to Musa, saying: Go to the unjust people,
SarwarWhen Your Lord told Moses to go to the unjust people of the Pharaoh
KhalifaRecall that your Lord called Moses: "Go to the transgressing people.
Hilali/KhanAnd (remember) when your Lord called Moosa (Moses) (saying): "Go to the people who are Zalimoon (polytheists and wrong-doing),
H/K/SaheehAnd [mention] when your Lord called Moses, [saying], Go to the wrongdoing people
MalikRemind them of the story when your Lord called Moses and said: "Go to the wicked people[10]
QXPAnd recall when your Lord called Moses, "Go to the nation of the oppressors,
Maulana AliAnd when thy Lord called Moses, saying: Go to the iniquitous people --

Qaribullah And when your Lord called to Moses, saying: 'Go to the harmdoing nation,

26:11 قوم فرعون الا يتقون


TransliterationQawma firAAawna ala yattaqoona
LiteralPharaoh's nation, do they not fear and obey?

Yusuf Ali"The people of the Pharaoh: will they not fear Allah?"
PickthalThe folk of Pharaoh. Will they not ward off (evil)?
Arberry the people of Pharaoh; will they not be godfearing?'
ShakirThe people of Firon: Will they not guard (against evil)?
Sarwarand ask them, "Why do you not fear God?".
Khalifa"Pharaoh's people; perhaps they reform."
Hilali/KhanThe people of Firaun (Pharaoh). Will they not fear Allah and become righteous?"
H/K/SaheehThe people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear Allah?
Malikthe people of Pharoah (Pharaoh). Have they no fear?"[11]
QXPTo the people of Pharaoh so that they may walk aright."

George Salethe people of Pharaoh; will they not dread Me?
JM RodwellThe people of Pharaoh. What! will they not fear me?"

Asadthe people of Pharaoh, who refuse to be conscious of Me!" [Lit., "Will they not be [or "become"] conscious (of me)?" Zamakhshari and Razi understand this rhetorical question in the sense apparent in my rendering, namely, as a statement of fact.]



ash-Shu`ara' 026:012

26:12 قال رب اني اخاف ان يكذبون


TransliterationQala rabbi innee akhafu an yukaththibooni
LiteralHe said: "My Lord, that I, I fear that they deny me .

Yusuf AliHe said: "O my Lord! I do fear that they will charge me with falsehood:
PickthalHe said: My Lord! Lo! I fear that they will deny me,
Arberry He said, 'My Lord, I fear they will cry me lies,
ShakirHe said: O my Lord! surely I fear that they will reject me;
SarwarHe replied, "Lord, I am afraid that they will call me a liar.
KhalifaHe said, "My Lord, I fear lest they disbelieve me.
Hilali/KhanHe said: "My Lord! Verily, I fear that they will belie me,
H/K/SaheehHe said, My Lord, indeed I fear that they will deny me
MalikMoses submitted, saying: "My Lord! I fear that they will reject me.[12]
QXPMoses said, "My Lord! I am afraid they will accuse me of lying.
Maulana AliHe said: My Lord, I fear that they will reject me.

AsadHe answered: "O my Sustainer! Behold, I fear that they will give me the lie,



ash-Shu`ara' 026:013

26:13 ويضيق صدري ولاينطلق لساني فارسل الى هارون


TransliterationWayadeequ sadree wala yantaliqu lisanee faarsil ila haroona
LiteralAnd my chest narrows/tightens and my tongue/speech does not speak/clarify, so send to Aaron .

Yusuf Ali"My breast will be straitened. And my speech may not go (smoothly): so send unto Aaron.
PickthalAnd I shall be embarrassed, and my tongue will not speak plainly, therefor send for Aaron (to help me).
Arberry and my breast will be straitened, and my tongue will not be loosed; so send to Aaron.
ShakirAnd by breast straitens, and my tongue is not eloquent, therefore send Thou to Haroun (to help me);
SarwarI feel nervous and my tongue is not fluent, so send Aaron with me.
Khalifa"I may lose my temper. My tongue gets tied; send for my brother Aaron.
Hilali/Khan"And my breast straitens, and my tongue expresses not well. So send for Haroon (Aaron) (to come along with me).
H/K/SaheehAnd that my breast will tighten and my tongue will not be fluent, so send for Aaron.
MalikMy breast feels cramped and my tongue is not eloquent; send Haroon (Aaron).[13]
QXPI shall be embarrassed and I might not speak confidently, so send for Aaron to help me.
Maulana AliAnd my breast straitens, and my tongue is not eloquent, so send for Aaron (too).
Free Minds"And my chest would become tight, and my tongue would not be able to express; so send for Aaron."
Qaribullah and my chest will become constricted and my tongue will not be loosed (in my speech), therefore, send to Aaron.

George Saleand lest my breast become straitened, and my tongue be not ready in speaking: Send therefore unto Aaron, to be my assistant.
JM RodwellAnd my breast is straitened, and I am slow of speech: send therefore to Aaron to be my helpmate.

Asadand then my breast will be straitened and my tongue will not be free: send, then, [this Thy command] to Aaron. [Cf. 20:25 - 34 and the corresponding notes. In the present context, stress is laid on the deep humility of Moses, who considered himself incapable of fulfilling the task for which he had been chosen, and asked God to entrust it to Aaron instead.]



ash-Shu`ara' 026:014

26:14 ولهم على ذنب فاخاف ان يقتلون


TransliterationWalahum AAalayya thanbun faakhafu an yaqtulooni
LiteralAnd for them on (against) me (is) a crime, so I fear that they kill me.

Yusuf Ali"And (further), they have a charge of crime against me; and I fear they may slay me."
PickthalAnd they have a crime against me, so I fear that they will kill me.
Arberry They also have a sin against me, and I fear they will slay me.'
ShakirAnd they have a crime against me, therefore I fear that they may slay me.
SarwarThey have charged me (with a crime) for which I am afraid they will kill me."
Khalifa"Also, they consider me a fugitive; I fear lest they kill me."
Hilali/Khan"And they have a charge of crime against me, and I fear they will kill me."
H/K/SaheehAnd they have upon me a [claim due to] sin, so I fear that they will kill me.
MalikThey have a charge of manslaughter against me and I fear they may put me to death."[14]
QXPAnd they stick a charge against me, so I fear they will kill me." (28:15).
Maulana AliAnd they have a crime against me, so I fear that they will kill me.

Qaribullah They hold a sin against me, and I fear that they will kill me. '

George SaleAlso they have a crime to object against me; and I fear they will put me to death.
JM RodwellFor they have a charge against me, and I fear lest they put me to death."

AsadMoreover, they keep a grave charge [pending] against me, and I fear that they will slay me." [Sc., "and thus frustrate my mission". This is a reference to Moses killing of the Egyptian, which was the cause of his subsequent flight from his native land (cf. 28:15 ff.)]

26:15 قال كلا فاذهبا باياتنا انا معكم مستمعون


TransliterationQala kalla faithhaba bi-ayatina inna maAAakum mustamiAAoona
LiteralHe said: "No but, so you (B) go/go away with Our verses/evidences/signs, that We are with you hearing/listening."

Yusuf AliAllah said: "By no means! proceed then, both of you, with Our Signs; We are with you, and will listen (to your call).
PickthalHe said: Nay, verily. So go ye twain with Our tokens. Lo! We shall be with you, Hearing.
Arberry Said He, 'No indeed; but go, both of you, with Our signs, and We assuredly shall be with you, listening.
ShakirHe said: By no means, so go you both with Our signs; surely We are with you, hearing;
SarwarThe Lord said, "Have no fear, both of you go with Our miracles. We shall closely listen to you."
KhalifaHe said, "No, (they will not). Go with My proofs. We will be with you, listening.
Hilali/KhanAllah said: "Nay! Go you both with Our Signs. Verily! We shall be with you, listening.
H/K/Saheeh[Allah] said, No. Go both of you with Our signs; indeed, We are with you, listening.
MalikAllah said: "Indeed not! Proceed, both of you, with Our signs; surely We are with you, listening.[15]
QXPAllah said, "Nay! Both of you go with Our Messages. We are with you."

LiteralSo you (B) come to Pharaoh, so say (B): 'That we are messenger(s) (of) the creations all together's/(universes') Lord.'

Yusuf Ali"So go forth, both of you, to Pharaoh, and say: 'We have been sent by the Lord and Cherisher of the worlds;
PickthalAnd come together unto Pharaoh and say: Lo! we bear a message of the Lord of the Worlds,

LiteralHe said: "Did we not bring you up in (between) us (as) a child/new born, and you stayed/remained in (between) us years from your lifetime?"

Yusuf Ali(Pharaoh) said: "Did we not cherish thee as a child among us, and didst thou not stay in our midst many years of thy life?
Pickthal(Pharaoh) said (unto Moses): Did we not rear thee among us as a child? And thou didst dwell many years of thy life among us,
Arberry He said, 'Did we not raise thee amongst us as a child? Didst thou not tarry among us years of thy life?
Shakir(Firon) said: Did we not bring you up as a child among us, and you tarried among us for (many) years of your life?
SarwarThe Pharaoh said, "Did we not bring you up in our home as an infant and did you not live with us for many years
KhalifaHe said, "Did we not raise you from infancy, and you spent many years with us?
Hilali/Khan(Firaun (Pharaoh)) said (to Moosa (Moses)): "Did we not bring you up among us as a child? And you did dwell many years of your life with us.

MalikWhen they went to Pharoah and conveyed the Message of Allah, he said: "Did we not cherish you when you were a child? Did you not stay several years of your life among us?[18]
QXPPharaoh said to Moses, "Did we not rear you as a child among us? And you lived with us many years of your life.
Maulana Ali(Pharaoh) said: Did we not bring thee up as a child among us, and thou didst tarry (many) years of thy life among us?

26:19 وفعلت فعلتك التي فعلت وانت من الكافرين


TransliterationWafaAAalta faAAlataka allatee faAAalta waanta mina alkafireena
LiteralAnd you made/did your one deed/act which you made/did, and you are from the disbelievers.

Yusuf Ali"And thou didst a deed of thine which (thou knowest) thou didst, and thou art an ungrateful (wretch)!"
PickthalAnd thou didst that thy deed which thou didst, and thou wast one of the ingrates.
Arberry And thou didst the deed thou didst, being one of the ungrateful!'
ShakirAnd you did (that) deed of yours which you did, and you are one of the ungrateful.
Sarwarand you did the deed which you did. You are certainly ungrateful."
Khalifa"Then you committed the crime that you committed, and you were ungrateful."
Hilali/Khan"And you did your deed, which you did (i.e. the crime of killing a man). And you are one of the ingrates."

MalikThen you did what you did; you are so ungrateful!"[19]
QXPAnd you did what you did, killing a man from our nation. You are of the ungrateful."
Maulana AliAnd thou didst (that) deed of thine which thou didst and thou art of the ungrateful ones.

Qaribullah Yet you were ungrateful and have done the deed you did. '

AsadAnd yet thou didst commit that [heinous] deed of thine, [lit., "thou didst commit thy deed which thou hast committed" - a construction meant to express the speaker's utter condemnation of the deed referred to: hence, my interpolation of the word "heinous". As regards the above allusions to Moses' childhood and youth at Pharaoh's court, the manslaughter committed by him, and his flight from Egypt, see 28:4 - 22.] and [hast thus shown that] thou art one of the ingrate!"



ash-Shu`ara' 026:020

26:20 قال فعلتها اذا وانا من الضالين


TransliterationQala faAAaltuha ithan waana mina alddalleena
LiteralHe said: "I made/did it then, and (while) I am from the misguided."

Yusuf AliMoses said: "I did it then, when I was in error.
PickthalHe said: I did it then, when I was of those who are astray.
Arberry Said he, 'Indeed I did it then, being one of those that stray;
ShakirHe said: I did it then while I was of those unable to see the right course;
SarwarMoses said, "I did do it and I made a mistake.
KhalifaHe said, "Indeed, I did it when I was astray.
Hilali/KhanMoosa (Moses) said: "I did it then, when I was an ignorant (as regards my Lord and His Message).
H/K/Saheeh[Moses] said, I did it, then, while I was of those astray.
MalikMoses replied: "I did that when I was a misguided youth.[20]
QXPMoses said, "Indeed I did it but I am lost how it happened!" (I only struck him once with a fist and he died (28:15)).
Maulana AliHe said: I did it then when I was of those who err.

Qaribullah He (Moses) replied: 'Indeed, I did that when I was among those who stray.

26:21 ففررت منكم لما خفتكم فوهب لي ربي حكما وجعلني من المرسلين

LiteralSo I escaped/fled from you when I feared you, so my Lord granted for me judgment/rule, and He made/put me from the messengers.

Yusuf Ali"So I fled from you (all) when I feared you; but my Lord has (since) invested me with judgment (and wisdom) and appointed me as one of the messengers.
PickthalThen I fled from you when I feared you, and my Lord vouchsafed me a command and appointed me (of the number) of those sent (by Him).
Arberry so I fled from you, fearing you. But my Lord gave me Judgment and made me one of the Envoys.
ShakirSo I fled from you when I feared you, then my Lord granted me wisdom and made me of the messengers;

ash-Shu`ara' 026:022

26:22 وتلك نعمة تمنها على ان عبدت بني اسرائيل


TransliterationWatilka niAAmatun tamunnuha AAalayya an AAabbadta banee isra-eela
LiteralAnd that is a blessing/goodness you brag/remind me repetitiously of , that you enslaved Israel's sons and daughters.

Yusuf Ali"And this is the favour with which thou dost reproach me,- that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel!"
PickthalAnd this is the past favour wherewith thou reproachest me: that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel.
Arberry That is a blessing thou reproachest me with, having enslaved the Children of Israel.'
ShakirAnd is it a favor of which you remind me that you have enslaved the children of Israel?
SarwarAnd this is the favor with which you oblige me: You have made the Israelites your slaves.
Khalifa"You are boasting that you did me a favor, while enslaving the Children of Israel!"
Hilali/Khan"And this is the past favour with which you reproach me, that you have enslaved the Children of Israel."
H/K/SaheehAnd is this a favor of which you remind me that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?
MalikIs it a favor with which you taunt me, that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?"[22]
QXPAnd this, the past favor you so tauntingly remind me! Yes, you raised me in your palaces. But it was so since you enslaved the Children of Israel."
Maulana AliAnd is it a favour of which thou remindest me that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel?
Free Minds"And that was a favour that you held against me, so you could continue to enslave the Children of Israel."
Qaribullah Is this then the blessing with which you reproach me, that you have the Children of Israel for worshipers! '

26:23 قال فرعون وما رب العالمين

Yusuf AliPharaoh said: "And what is the 'Lord and Cherisher of the worlds'?"

Arberry Pharaoh said, 'And what is the Lord of all Being?'
ShakirFiron said: And what is the Lord of the worlds?
SarwarThe Pharaoh asked, "Who is the Lord of the Universe?".

26:24 قال رب السماوات والارض ومابينهما ان كنتم موقنين


TransliterationQala rabbu alssamawati waal-ardi wama baynahuma in kuntum mooqineena
LiteralHe (Moses) said: "Lord (of) the skies/space and the earth/Planet Earth, and what (is) between them (B), if youwere sure/certain."

Yusuf Ali(Moses) said: "The Lord and Cherisher of the heavens and the earth, and all between,- if ye want to be quite sure."
Pickthal(Moses) said: Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye had but sure belief.
Arberry He said, 'The Lord of the heavens and earth, and what between them is, if you have faith.'
ShakirHe said: The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure.
SarwarMoses replied, "The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you want to be certain".
KhalifaHe said, "The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and everything between them. You should be certain about this."
Hilali/KhanMoosa (Moses) said: "Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, if you seek to be convinced with certainty."

MalikMoses replied: "He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really care to believe."[24]
QXPMoses said, "Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you allow yourselves to be convinced." (43:51, 79:24).
Maulana AliHe said: The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure.

Qaribullah 'He' (Moses) replied: 'is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you believe! '

26:25 قال لمن حوله الا تستمعون

LiteralHe (Pharaoh) said to whom (was) around/surrounding him: "Do you not hear/listen?"

Yusuf Ali(Pharaoh) said to those around: "Did ye not listen (to what he says)?"
Pickthal(Pharaoh) said unto those around him: Hear ye not?
Arberry Said he to those about him, 'Do you not hear?'
Shakir(Firon) said to those around him: Do you not hear?
SarwarThe Pharaoh said to the people around him, "Did you hear that?".

LiteralHe (Pharaoh) said: "That your messenger who was sent to you (is) mad/insane (E)."

Yusuf Ali(Pharaoh) said: "Truly your messenger who has been sent to you is a veritable madman!"
Pickthal(Pharaoh) said: Lo! your messenger who hath been sent unto you is indeed a madman!
Arberry Said he, 'Surely your Messenger who was sent to you is possessed!'
ShakirSaid he: Most surely your Messenger who is sent to you is mad.
SarwarThe Pharaoh said, "The Messengers who has been sent to you is certainly insane".
KhalifaHe said, "Your messenger who is sent to you is crazy."
Hilali/KhanFiraun (Pharaoh) said: "Verily, your Messenger who has been sent to you is a madman!"
H/K/Saheeh[Pharaoh] said, Indeed, your messengerâ who has been sent to you is mad.
MalikPharoah interjected: "This Messenger of yours, who has been sent to you, is crazy."[27]
QXPPharaoh said, "Your Messenger that has been sent to you is a crazy man."
Maulana Ali(Pharaoh) said: Surely your messenger, who is sent to you, is mad.
Free MindsHe said: "This messenger of yours who has been sent to you is mad!"
Qaribullah (Pharaoh) said: 'Surely, the Messenger who has been sent to you is mad!'

George SalePharaoh said unto those who were present, your Apostle, who is sent unto you, is certainly distracted.

Asad[Pharaoh] exclaimed: "Behold, [this] your `apostle' who [claims that he] has been sent unto you is mad indeed!



ash-Shu`ara' 026:028

26:28 قال رب المشرق والمغرب ومابينهما ان كنتم تعقلون


TransliterationQala rabbu almashriqi waalmaghribi wama baynahuma in kuntum taAAqiloona
LiteralHe (Moses) said: "Lord (of) the sunrise/east and the sunset/west and what (is) between them (B) if you were reasoning/comprehending ."

Yusuf Ali(Moses) said: "Lord of the East and the West, and all between! if ye only had sense!"
PickthalHe said: Lord of the East and the West and all that is between them, if ye did but understand.
Arberry He said, 'The Lord of the East and West, and what between them is, if you have understanding,'
ShakirHe said: The Lord of the east and the west and what is between them, if you understand.
SarwarMoses continued, "He is the Lord of the East and West and all that is between them, if only you would think".
KhalifaHe said, "The Lord of the east and the west, and everything between them, if you understand."
Hilali/KhanMoosa (Moses) said: "Lord of the east and the west, and all that is between them, if you did but understand!"

QXPMoses said, "He is the Lord of the East and the West and everything in between. You would know if you use reason."
Maulana AliHe said: The Lord of the East and the West and what is between them, if you have any sense.

Qaribullah 'He is the Lord of the East and the West, ' said he (Moses), 'and all that is between them, if you could understand! '

ash-Shu`ara' 026:029

26:29 قال لئن اتخذت الها غيري لاجعلنك من المسجونين


TransliterationQala la-ini ittakhathta ilahan ghayree laajAAalannaka mina almasjooneena
LiteralHe (Pharaoh) said: "If (E) you took/received a god other than me, I will make you (E) from the imprisoned/prisoners."

Yusuf Ali(Pharaoh) said: "If thou dost put forward any god other than me, I will certainly put thee in prison!"
Pickthal(Pharaoh) said: If thou choosest a god other than me, I assuredly shall place thee among the prisoners.
Arberry Said he, 'If thou takest a god other than me, I shall surely make thee one of the imprisoned.'
ShakirSaid he: If you will take a god besides me, I will most certainly make you one of the imprisoned.
SarwarPharaoh said, "If you put forward any god other than me, I will surely put you in prison".
KhalifaHe said, "If you accept any god, other than me, I will throw you in the prison."
Hilali/KhanFiraun (Pharaoh) said: "If you choose an ilah (god) other than me, I will certainly put you among the prisoners."
H/K/Saheeh[Pharaoh] said, If you take a god other than me, I will surely place you among those imprisoned.
MalikAt this, Pharoah, who did not want to listen any more said: "If you serve any other god besides me, I shall have you thrown into prison."[29]
QXPPharaoh said, "If you choose a god other than me, I will put you in prison."
Maulana Ali(Pharaoh) said: If thou takest a god besides me, I will certainly put thee is prison.

Qaribullah 'If you take any other god except myself, ' he (Pharaoh) replied, 'you shall be thrown into prison. '

AsadSaid [Pharaoh]: "Indeed, if thou choose to worship any deity other than me, I shall most certainly throw thee into prison! [In the religion of ancient Egypt, the king (or "Pharaoh", as each of the rulers was styled) represented an incarnation of the divine principle, and was considered to be a god in his own right. Hence, a challenge to his divinity implied a challenge to the prevalent religious system as a whole.]



ash-Shu`ara' 026:030

26:30 قال اولو جئتك بشئ مبين


TransliterationQala awa law ji/tuka bishay-in mubeenin
LiteralHe (Moses) said: "Even if I came to you with a clear/evident thing."

Yusuf Ali(Moses) said: "Even if I showed you something clear (and) convincing?"
PickthalHe said: Even though I show thee something plain?
Arberry He said, 'What, even though I brought thee something so manifest?'
ShakirHe said: What! even if I bring to you something manifest?
SarwarMoses asked, "What if I were to bring you clear proof (of the existence of God)?".
KhalifaHe said, "What if I show you something profound?"
Hilali/KhanMoosa (Moses) said: "Even if I bring you something manifest (and convincing)?"
H/K/Saheeh[Moses] said, Even if I brought you proof manifest?
MalikAt this, Moses said: "What if I show you a convincing sign?"[30]
QXPMoses responded, "Even if I bring to you all evidence of the Truth?"
Maulana AliHe said: Even if I show thee something plain?
Free MindsHe said: "What if I brought you proof?"
Qaribullah 'What, even if I brought you something clear, ' said he (Moses).

George SaleMoses answered, what, although I come unto you with a convincing miracle?
JM RodwellSaid Moses, "What! if I shew thee that which shall be a proof of my mission?"

26:31 قال فات به ان كنت من الصادقين


TransliterationQala fa/ti bihi in kunta mina alssadiqeena
LiteralHe (Pharaoh) said: "So come/bring with it if you were from the truthful."

Yusuf Ali(Pharaoh) said: "Show it then, if thou tellest the truth!"
Pickthal(Pharaoh) said: Produce it then, if thou art of the truthful!
Arberry Said he, 'Bring it then, if thou art of the truthful.'
ShakirSaid he: Bring it then, if you are of the truthful ones.
SarwarThe Pharaoh replied, "Bring it, if you are telling the truth."
KhalifaHe said, "Then produce it, if you are truthful."
Hilali/KhanFiraun (Pharaoh) said: "Bring it forth then, if you are of the truthful!"
H/K/Saheeh[Pharaoh] said, Then bring it, if you should be of the truthful.
MalikPharoah said: "Go ahead, show it if you are of the truthful."[31]
QXPHe said, "Bring your signs if you are truthful."
Maulana Ali(Pharaoh) said: Show it, then, if thou art of the truthful.

Qaribullah He (Pharaoh) replied: 'Show us your sign, if you are of the truthful. '

George SalePharaoh replied, produce it therefore, if thou speakest truth.

Asad[Pharaoh] answered: "Produce it, then, if thou art a man of truth!"



ash-Shu`ara' 026:032

26:32 فالقى عصاه فاذا هي ثعبان مبين


TransliterationFaalqa AAasahu fa-itha hiya thuAAbanun mubeenun
LiteralSo he threw/threw away his stick/cane, so then it is (a) clear/evident snake.

Yusuf AliSo (Moses) threw his rod, and behold, it was a serpent, plain (for all to see)!
PickthalThen he flung down his staff and it became a serpent manifest,
Arberry So he cast his staff, and behold, it was a serpent manifest.
ShakirSo he cast down his rod, and lo! it was an obvious serpent,
SarwarMoses threw his staff and suddenly it became a serpent.
KhalifaHe then threw his staff, whereupon it became a profound snake.
Hilali/KhanSo (Moosa (Moses)) threw his stick, and behold, it was a serpent, manifest.
H/K/SaheehSo [Moses] threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent manifest.
MalikHearing this, Moses threw down his staff, and thereupon it changed into a veritable serpent.[32]

LiteralAnd he removed/pulled his hand so then it is white to the lookers/seers .

Yusuf AliAnd he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to all beholders!
PickthalAnd he drew forth his hand and lo! it was white to the beholders.
Arberry And he drew forth his hand, and lo, it was white to the beholders.
ShakirAnd he drew forth his hand, and lo! it appeared white to the onlookers.
SarwarThen he uncovered his hand and it was sheer white to the onlookers.
KhalifaAnd he took out his hand, and it was white to the beholders.
Hilali/KhanAnd he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to all beholders!

Yusuf Ali(Pharaoh) said to the Chiefs around him: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed:
Pickthal(Pharaoh) said unto the chiefs about him: Lo! this is verily a knowing wizard,
Arberry Said he to the Council about him, 'Surely this man is a cunning sorcerer
Shakir(Firon) said to the chiefs around him: Most surely this is a skillful magician,
SarwarThe Pharaoh said to the people around him, "He is certainly a skillful magician.
KhalifaHe said to the elders around him, "This is an experienced magician.
Hilali/Khan(Firaun (Pharaoh)) said to the chiefs around him: "Verily! This is indeed a well-versed sorcerer.
H/K/Saheeh[Pharaoh] said to the eminent ones around him, Indeed, this is a learned magician.
MalikAfter witnessing both the miracles, Pharoah (Pharaoh) said to the chiefs around him: "This fellow is certainly a skilled magician,[34]
QXPPharaoh said to his chiefs, "He is a magical debater.
Maulana Ali(Pharaoh) said to the chiefs around him: Surely this is a skilful enchanter,
